Also, I tried making a full clone of the VM, but that was unsuccessful.

Why would you clone a vm which did not work? By definition a clone is an exact copy!

I read it in a previous post on this forum and it was easy enough to try out without messing anything up further. Apparently it worked to remedy a similar issue, but didn't work out for me.

My crystal ball is a bit cloudy this morning and I can't tell which version of Windows 10 and VirtualBox you have installed.

-Andy.
My crystal ball is currently broken. If you want assistance you are going to have to give me all of the necessary information.
Please don't ask me to do your homework for you, I have more than enough of my own things to do.

From the VBoxHardening.log, even though it's not the "proper" way to get that information (the VBox.log is preferred):
4aac.48bc: Log file opened: 5.1.14r112924 g_hStartupLog=0000000000000068 g_uNtVerCombined=0xa03fab00
4aac.48bc: \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll:
4aac.48bc:     FileVersion:     10.0.16299.192 (WinBuild.160101.0800)
So, that's VirtualBox 5.1.14 running on the Win10 build 16299, aka Fall Creator's Update, or version 1709.

@lbt86
That's quite an old version of VirtualBox. If you want to use the latest version for your host/guests, you should also consider doing the same for VirtualBox. As of this writing, that would be version 5.2.6. If that doesn't work you should try the latest test builds, especially with all the Spectre/Meltdown patches coming in from all sides.

Speaking of which, since you're using an Ubuntu guest, look at the "Important" part about the Guest Additions in the download page: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and download the updated Guest Additions for 5.2.6.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

That must count as my "one new thing learnt for today"... and still so early here in the UK!
