This problem is under investigation apparently. I tried to use some older version of the VB additions 5.1.22, and the audio seemed to improve a little bit. But I preferred to downgrade to 5.1.22. Now the audio works fine again.

Please give build 120822 a try, on my systems everything sounds better, there are nearly no extra noise now in audio playback.

I was a little bit too optimistic about the new build 120822. There are no distortion here but sound disappears after 11 or 12 minutes. Just because the sound stream became asynchronous and then VM sound would be stopped. Even if playback in the VM still goes on. See more in this ticket.

If I use the HD Audio driver for the guest, the audio lags behind the video a few frames for any streaming video such as news or YouTube
I had the same issue prior to v5.2.6.... But now it seemed to be fixed (itself) for me.

I have been experiencing exactly the issue where the 5.2 release broke sound (win7 vm) in that it is unusably distorted. Reverted to a previous build (5.1.1?) which has no sound problems.
Just tried 5.2.7 r120865 and experienced exactly the issue described now, where sound seems fine for about 10 min then cuts out completely.

@easyA Just to verify, this is happening on a Windows host, right?

Yes, sorry, Win10 x64 host on Win7 x64 guest. Plenty of RAM, not hitting any bottlenecks AFAIK.

Edit: haven't thoroughly tested but audio works fine on linux guests

Hi,

I have the same issue after updating to 5.2.6. I have Ubuntu guest on Windows 7 host.
After watching a video or listening to music for a while audio gets distorted with cracking and echo. Then after a while it goes back to normal and then again.
When playing sounds from host all is fine.

Any fixes?
