Blue screen after windows update

Post by Bigfoot73 »

I am running VirtualBox 5.2.2 on a Windows 10 host.
Today there were some windows updates automatically installed. After that the host will now crash with a blue screen as soon as I try to start any guest.
Reinstall VirtualBox does not help.
I have disabled 2D and 3D acceleration.
I can't find anything more helpful than "hardware problem" in the windows logs.

Anyone with the same problem? Or with some troubleshooting suggestions?

(VirtualBox log files attached.)

I smell Hyper-V's involvement...
After making 110% sure that Hyper-V is disabled in the Windows Features, you might want to make sure that Fast Boot is disabled and do a cold boot (i.e. shut down the host for a minute or two). You also must make sure that nothing else is using Hyper-V, things like antivirus, debuggers, emulators, etc. Finally, make also sure that DeviceGuard or CredentialGuard is not activated on your host.

You have a good nose...
I had to disable Hyper-V and VirtualBox is happy again.
I didn't think of that because I didn't expect a blue screen as a result.

We've been seeing it lately with the Win10 updates happening more and more...

See for example "#16801: Running a Virtual Machine when Windows Hyper-V is enabled should NOT Crash Windows", one of the few duplicate tickets left open (that one has a nice "sought resolution"). And yes, there are plenty of duplicates... ;)
