Sound Problem With VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431

Postby Reno Drums » 23. Nov 2017, 13:26

Hi, I recently installed VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431 on Win10-64, and now while reproducing sound it crackles terribly. I found this problem on different PC´s (all containing Windows 2000 as VM).

I reinstalled 5.1.28-117968 and it produces no crackles, but the sound isn´t ok. neither. For example, the system sound ding.wav comes as "d-ding" - other sounds as well. I never noticed that before during reproducing music and midi files.

So, I reinstalled VirtualBox-5.1.14-112924 which I used before 5.1.28, and all works fine.

I hope the problem can be resolved soon.

I have a very similar problem with VB 5.2.0 r118431, but Linux is installed as guest. The problem appears on several Win10 host, so it's probably regression in 5.2 .

Host: Win 10 Pro.
Tested guests: Lubuntu 17.04 (kernel 4.10.0-37) and Xubuntu 17.10 (kernel 4.13.0-17)
Tested GA: 5.1.30-118389 and 5.2.1-118918

While playing music, good sound is constantly interrupted by crackles (in average 5 sec of crackles every minute). The problem has gone when I downgraded to 5.1.30.

I just installed Win7 guest on Win10 and got the same sound problem. So it does not depend on the type of the guest system.

Same here, audio has lot's of "crackling" that wasn't there in 5.1.

Host Win10.0.16299
VirtualBox 5.2.2 GA
Guests XP, Win10
Audio Controller set both Intel HD Audio and ICH AC97.

Thank you

I've just uploaded a new 5.2 test build which contains more fixes regarding "crackling" and audio distortions. Could you please give these builds a try and report back if these fix the issue for you? You can get the latest 5.2 test builds here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds

Thank you!

I am having the same problem here (windows 10 64 bit host, and windows 10 64 bit guest)
Both windows 10 are updated to the latest version (fall update 2017)

I have tried 5.2.3 beta (As suggested above)
It is slightly better then 5.2.2 but the problem is still there.

When i try to watch a video on virtual box, the sounds are getting crackling after a few minutes.
There were no problem with Virtualbox 5.1.x version. (However there were some drag-drop from/to host-guest problems there, so thats why i moved to 5.2)

I will move to VMWare if i cannot solve this problem soon.

Re: Sound Problem With VirtualBox-5.2.0-118431, VirtualBox-5.2.3-119405

Postby Reno Drums » 9. Dec 2017, 15:41

I tried that testbuild (VirtualBox-5.2.3-119405-Win), but the crackling still occurs after some minutes.
I tried to install the latest build 5.2.3-119552, but it failed (insufficient privileges), even when I retried as Administrator. <-- rare thing
I tried to reinstall the build 5.2.3-119405, which had been installed successfully some days ago, but now it failed too (insufficient privileges). <--- rare thing too

So I stepped back to build 5.2.2-119230, installed it successfully and installed the latest ExtensionPack (119552).
But there is no change concerning crackling.

@Reno Drums With "no chance" you actually mean that the problem still persists, right? Would you mind in testing yet another 5.2 test build (119577) with audio debugging enabled? This should produce another set of diagnosis .WAV files which hopefully should help us working further on the issue. Thank you!
