[Solved] Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
[Solved] Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
I've recently updated to Windows 10 Pro Creative update Version 1709, build 16299.64.
I've tried every version of Virtualbox from 4.12 to 5.20 and every one crashes Windows.
The program installs, but when ending a session the green screen of death occurs and Windows reboots and messes up all the icons on my screen.
Virtualbox worked when my computer was Windows 7.
Anyone else having this problem?
I need to know if there is going to be a new version of Virtualbox that actually will work under the latest Windows 10, or is the problem something else.
Thanks.

Don't try to install older versions, except the latest one with the latest Win10.TonyTS wrote:I've tried every version of Virtualbox from 4.12 to 5.20 and every one crashes Windows.

Not really, must be something on your setup. Which answers your next question as well...TonyTS wrote:Anyone else having this problem?

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
What exactly happens with version 5.2.0 of VirtualBox on Windows 10 version 1709. What crashes? The install? VirtualBox when you start it? A vm when you try to run it?
Everything works fine here with that combination.

I'll try again to install the latest version of VirtualBox.
I'll try to take a picture of where the failure occurs.
Thanks.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
I un-installed any previous version of VirtualBox.
I also cleaned the registry and got rid of the previous virtual files.
I installed the latest version: 5.20, as administrator.
I started it and started setting things up for DOS.
I set it up with all the DOS defaults.
When I got to the page that said "Select start-up disk", if I picked anything on that page it would crash Windows.
The window was blue, and it said: "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We'er just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you."
The code seemed to say "SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION".
Any idea about this?
Thanks.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
It's definitely some bad interaction with something on your setup. I really don't know what. Usually you need to get a memory dump and head to the bugtracker for cases like that as we usually don't have the expertise to resolve issues like that.
Except one thing... The Win10 update. You may have activated Hyper-V just by updating. So try to disable Hyper-V and see if that helps. We've had people getting crashes with this similar setup.
If not, please post a picture of the place just before it crashes, because I don't quite understand exactly what you mean by the page that said "Select start-up disk". I can't quite place it...

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
Yes, it is very odd. Even if Hyper-V was active, I can't see how it would interfere with DOS!
Have you tried to install any other OS in a vm? What are you trying to install DOS from? A physical floppy or a virtual one?

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
Even Odder. I have just installed DOS 6.22 on my Dell desktop running Windows 10 version 1709 and VirtualBox 5.2.0 . Nothing unusual happened.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
But, do you have Hyper-V enabled? That's the question. There have been reports (even tickets, can't find it now, will update if I will) that having Hyper-V enabled, causes a BSOD when you run VirtualBox. It's not a matter of which VM you will run. And I'm not sure if it happens on every setup.

Yes, I disabled Hyper-V.
Here are the steps where the error occurred. They are backwards, however.
Thanks.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
The 1st and 3rd images are all right (not really necessary), but it's in the 2nd image where you get the crash. You click on something that's causing the crash. Which one:
If it's a CD, is there anything in the CD, or is it empty?
Can you try the same procedure with a WinXP VM?
- The "Start"?
- The "Cancel"?
- The drop-down menu?
- The yellow icon?

Yes, host drive D: worries me too. I used virtual floppy images.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
Still... a BSOD? No matter what the user mistake, that shouldn't happen. Something messing with the kernel? At that point? Does not compute. I have something in mind, but I'll have to wait for the OP to answer first, and take it from there.

Re: Nothing works on Windows 10 latest update
First off as you can see there is a Floppy controller and an IDE controller:
Finally when I click the Start button it crashes.
That is far as I ever get.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Next the only thing listed is Host Drive 'D:'
When I click the Open folder icon, it asks to choose a virtual optical disk file. I don't know where that is. So I cancel the open dialog window. Finally when I click the Start button it crashes.
That is far as I ever get.
Hope this helps.
Thanks.
