[WorksForMe] Audio recently stopped working on VirtualBox with Windows 7 host (#17175)

Post by Al B »

[ModEdit, related ticket #17175]
In the last couple of weeks audio stopped working on all guests. I'm running VirtualBox on Windows 7. I've tried reinstalling, reverting to earlier versions, checking the sound drivers on my host PC, using both Windows DirectSound and AC97. Nothing works. When I test the sound in the guest, it shows that everything is working, but no sound comes out on the host. However, everything works just fine on another computer running Windows 7.

I feel like something on my PC is blocking the audio from the guest to the host. I'm at a loss as to how to debug this.

  • Upgrade to the newly released 5.2.0, it contains a lot of audio changes.
  • Follow a "start the VM from cold-boot" / "observe error" / "shutdown the VM" cycle. Be sure to change the volume control level from the Taskbar.
  • With the VM shut down completely (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response (see the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I installed VirtualBox 5.2. I powered on the guest and installed the 5.2 guest additions and then powered it off. Next I powered on the guest, observed that there was no sound, adjusted the sound level from the taskbar and powered the guest off. Then I used 'show log' without saving or otherwise disturbing the virtual machine and saved and zipped the log.

The zipped log file is attached.

Thanks again!

Can someone please explain to me why do they think they know better than the proposed template defaults? Why in the seven kingdoms did you change the chipset? Why? Please change it back to the default PIIX3. And do *not* mess with the templates unless you know and realize the issues that the changes might cause. ICH9 is listed as experimental and it is *not* suggested for anything other than OSX guests.

Please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues. Update your drivers.

How many audio inputs/outputs do you have on your system? They seem way, way too many. Can you disconnect/disable a couple of them?

Re: Audio recently stopped working on VirtualBox with Windows 7 host (#17175)

Post by Al B »

Thank you again for helping me.

I reset the chipset to PIIX3 (I probably changed it while searching for a setting that would work).

I disabled all of the audio drivers on the host system except for the Realtek driver, which I verified is up to date.

I uninstalled Hydravision.

I uninstalled and reinstalled VirtualBox using 'Run as Administrator' per the reccomendation in the 'Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues' FAQ.

I also tried using the 'ICH AC97' setting under the 'Audio' settings - it didn't work either.

Audio still works on the host and in VMware guests, but still does not work on the VirtualBox guest, although the guest OS reports that sound is working.

I also have VirtualBox guests for Windows-XP, Windows-10, Open-SUSE and Ubuntu. Sound no longer works on any of them.

I've attached the VBox.log file and the VBoxHardening.log file. I could not find any errors in either, although I really don't know what to look for.

Thanks again for helping!

It must be some sort of configuration from within the guest. Your logs look fine, except maybe the two lines below, but that's not the smoking gun:
00:00:03.586050 DSound: Guest source 'Line In' is using host recording device with GUID '{Default device}'
00:00:03.586241 DSound: Capture device currently is unavailable
Could you do me a favor and download a Linux LiveDVD? Try an Ubuntu or a Mint for example. Create a new VM, accept the defaults, don't touch anything in the settings and boot from it, simply trying it out, not necessarily installing it. Do you have sound then?

Re: Audio recently stopped working on VirtualBox with Windows 7 host (#17175)

Post by Al B »

I downloaded 'ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso', 'ubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-i386.iso' and 'ubuntustudio-16.04.3-dvd-amd64.iso'. Ubuntu Studio is a live DVD.

I created a guest on my Desktop PC using Ubuntu Studio, accepted the defaults, booted from it using the 'try it out' option, opened firefox, went to youtube and played a video -- no sound.

I repeated this sequence on my laptop and played the same youtube video -- my laptop had sound.

I created a guest on my laptop using Ubuntu-64, booted it up, opened firefox and played the same youtube video -- my laptop had sound.

I then copied the guest to my desktop PC, booted it up, opened firefox and played the same youtube video -- no sound.

I created a guest on my desktop PC using Ubuntu-32, booted it up, opened firefox and played the same youtube video -- no sound.

I then copied the guest to my laptop, booted it up, opened firefox and played the same youtube video -- my laptop had sound.

The log files for all 6 procedures are attached.

Thank you again!

You posted 6 (!!!) VBoxHardening.log files. We don't need to have a look at them, unless the exit code is not zero. So, please delete the hardening logs and upload the VBox.log file, for only one of the guests. We don't really need all three of them. Thanks for zipping them...

My apologies. I thought you could simply ignore the information you considered irrelevant. Attached is just the log from the Ubuntu LiveDVD. There was no sound when I ran it on my desktop computer, but there was sound when I repeated the procedure on my laptop computer.

Also, I created guests on both my desktop and my laptop. No sound on my desktop from either the guest created on the desktop or the guest created on the laptop. But there was sound on the laptop, both from the guest created on the desktop and the guest created on the laptop.

This suggests that the there is nothing wrong with the guests themselves, but that the problem is in the way that VirtualBox passes the audio to the host on the desktop.

Also, audio works just fine on the host and in VMware running on the host.

The only thing that I found, was an unusual amount of references to your speakers. I really don't have a clue why. There are two "batches" of messages, one around the 51 seconds mark, and another one around 18 seconds later:

You might want to check the Wiki article on audio debugging and unless someone else has a better reading on the logs, head again to the bugtracker with any audio related logs.

I believe that something is not right with the audio settings on your host, either some filter, or a per application setting or something funky that you don't come across usually...

Re: Audio recently stopped working on VirtualBox with Windows 7 host (#17175)

Post by Al B »

I discovered that sound does work when the guest is started with either a headless start or a detachable start, but not with a normal start. Attached is the log file for the Ubuntu LiveDVD with detachable start.

I hope this sheds some light on the problem.

I also updated the Bugtracker entry (Ticket #17175).

Thank you again for your help.

Per the Wiki article on audio debugging, set the guest to dump audio output and enable verbose logging, and ran the guest with a normal start (no sound output).

The dumped audio output files were Ok.

Attached is the log file for this session.

Next, I disabled dumping the audio output.

I noticed that I sometimes get distorted sound in the guest when I use a detachable start (still no sound with a normal start).

How do I show old logs in the VirtualBox Log Viewer?

Thank you for your help!

Requested closing of the ticket. The problem was a corrupted setting in the Realtek audio manager.
