RHEL7 guest on Windows7 host: NAT is not working

Post by fipnova51 »

HI community,

I'm using VirtualBox 5.1.28
My host OS is Windows 7
I created a VM using RHEL 7.4 using NAT but when the VM is up, I cannot access the web. My understanding of NAT is I should be able to access the web.

Can you tell me if anything is misconfigured?

First of all at the level of windows 7,
I'm using my wifi with IP 10.26.17.xxx
I have a proxy configured to go on the web.

I have a network adapter named 'VirtualBox Host-Only Network' who IPV4 properties is set to 'Obtain an IP address automatically'

Then at the level of VirualBox, if I look at the Preferences,
I have a 'hostOnly adapter' referencing 'VirtualBost Host-Only Ethernet adapter' with the following configuration
card tab:
IP address: 169.254.195.254
IP network mask: 255.255.0.0
DHCP tab
server address: 192.168.56.100
network mask: 255.255.255.0
address low limit: 192.168.56.101
address high limit: 192168.56.254

Finally at the level of my VM, the network is configured with Card1 activated in NAT mode. The checkbox 'cable plugged' is checked
When RHEL is up: I have thw following output of ifconfig -a
virbr0: inet 192.168.122.1

Did I break anything in my system?

Thanks for your help

Moving to "Linux Guests" from "Windows Hosts" as the problem seems to be with your guest.

You should not be getting a 192.168.122.1 address, you should be getting a 10.0.2.15 address if you didn't touch anything. Did you create this VM or it was already installed when you downloaded it? Because that address that you're getting is not on your physical or your virtual network range, so you shouldn't be getting something like that from the DHCP server. Unless it was manually configured.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hi Socratis,

I didn't install a 'ready to be used' VM.

I installed the RHEL7 from the ISO image. I can give a try by doing a complete recreation.

Let me try this and I'll keep you posted.

Thanks

Simon
