Bridging HIFs crashes WinVista host. VB 1.6.4

Post by SamDalton »

Two guests(WinXP and ubuntu 8.0.4) each with own HIF were running
happily on WinVista 32bit host. VB was 1.6.2.

Both HIFs are lost when VB is updated to 1.6.4. This bug has been
around long while. This is not the reason of this post. It is just a
start of the problem.

The bridge operational in 1.6.2 is deleted since it has only one member
attached to it ; local NIC. Two new HIFs are created thru VBoxGUI.
The new HIFs and local NIC are bridged together thru control
panel/network connections. WinVista starts bridging, and soon crashes.
The Bluescreen says it crashed somewhere in ndis.sys. Network
connections of WinVista after bootup shows one HIF is bridged, but
the other HIF is not.

The bridging is done carefully following the instructions in section 6.6
of user manual. It worked fine in 1.6.2 and its earlier versions,
but does not in 1.6.4.

What am I missing?

Currently VB is downgraded back to 1.6.2. The HIFs are up and
running good on bridged interface.

Does Vista crash before you start the VM of do you have to start the VM?

Bridging HIFs crashes WinVista host. VB 1.6.4

Frank, thanks for your reply.

I am not sure which VM is referred to as, GUI or guestOS.
But Vista crashes when VBoxGUI and guests are all closed.

Steps are as follows;
Close VBoxGUI and guestOS
Uninstall 1.6.2
Install 1.6.4
Delete the damaged bridge: HIFs are lost
Run vboxmanage createhostif <HIF> to create two HIFs
Create the bridge with local NIC and HIFs.
Vista crashes.

As I posted earlier, above steps work for earlier versions.

This is status update.

Tried 1.6.6 to update from 1.6.2.
Vista(host) did not go bluescreen while creating bridge, this time.

Seems the issue is corrected in the latest version.
Nice job done.
