Windows 10 Host cannot find VB USB drivers

Post by Gazcaz »

I have installed 5.1.28 on a Windows 10 host version 1703. I have installed extensions and Guest additions. When a USB flash drive is in the host, I can select it as a filter in Virtual Box, but the icon at the bottom says " no USB device attached" I am running Windows 7 in Virtual Box.
In the device manager of the Host it has a error against the Virtual Box USB. When I attempt to update the driver Windows says it cannot find the driver. I had a VB fully functioning before the last Windows 10 update. Can anyone offer advice as I need to be able to have guest access to Host USB's

I have reinstalled extension pack with no change to performance. The virtual machine captures the USB as it becomes unavailable to the host, but the icon in the bottom right corner still says that "no USB is attached". USB does not appear in Windows Explorer of Windows 7 guest OS. Can anyone help with this issue please?

I have installed the Intel USB eXtension in the Windows 7 Guest. The USB's are being captured. When I check USB filters it says that every USB I have tried is captured but on the icon in bottom right of screen says no USB attached. I made a second machine that has USB 2.0 only as per Windows 7. My usb mouse now works but Flash drives still not.

As can be seen the device is captured but is not available. I have done everything but the reinstall of VB. I have loaded a genuine copy of windows seven which has been activated. I am concerned if I re install Virtual Box the disc will not be seen as a genuine copy a second time. Everything worked fine the first time I had VB but I was sold a non-genuine copy of Windows 7 so I uninstalled VB and re-installed after getting a genuine copy of 7. The install of VB was exactly the same except it was 5.1.28 not the previous version.

I have the vague feeling that we're not communicating properly:

Host Operating System is Windows 10 Home 64 bit
O.S build 10563.608 Version 1703
VBoxManage- Version is the only command that I got an answer.
I have very little experience using the command prompt so I may not be doing the right thing.
If there is any communication problems it will be from my end. Thank you for your continued effort to find a resoution to my problem

[Mod edit: Removed a grainy picture of a partial listing of the VirtualBox folder]

Plug the USB device. Do not run VirtualBox. Open a Command Prompt on the host. Give it the commands:
  • cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox"
    VBoxManage -version
    VBoxManage list extpacks
    VBoxManage list usbhost
    VBoxManage list usbfilters
    VBoxManage showvminfo "<Your_Virtual_Machine_Name>"
And replace the <Your_Virtual_Machine_Name> with the actual name of your VM. Copy and paste the text, I do *not* want pictures, I want the text.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

I've reread this, and I'm not seeing the expected statement of the obvious, i.e. that you uninstalled and then reinstalled VirtualBox after the Win10 host update.

Also it would be nice to have some indication of which USB device in the latter list is the one you are trying to talk to from the VM.

I had not been able to access the USB before or after the update. I was not aware that I had to uninstall and reinstall. Was there a notification that this must be done?

This is the most important as it contains software I need to install.
Neither USB can be used.

Have you installed the USB3 drivers in your Win7 guest? And if you ask me how, honestly, I'll lock the thread :D

Remove all values except the Name, VendorId and ProductId, as you may have read.

As for the re-installation of VirtualBox, Win10 updates make this sort of mandatory. Win10 updates are not small patches, they're almost a reinstallation of Windows, so 3rd party software that installs low level drivers (like VirtualBox) is seriously affected by this and needs to be reinstalled.
