virtualbox.exe memory reading error (#17071)

Post by KaKoussNight »

[Mod edit, related ticket #17071: Random memory reading errors on Windows XP VMs]
Hello.

When I try to install a Windows XP VM, at the end of the setup, it crashes with the message : "Instruction at 0x... referenced memory at 0x000... The memory could not be read."
I deleted and reinstalled the VM, same problem.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Virtualbox : same problem
Tested with another virtualization software : it works.

I already installed this VM in the past and it worked just fine, but not anymore.

Version of Virtualbox : 5.1.26
Host OS : Windows 10 1703 x64

Log file attached.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please do not chop the logs. Instead ZIP the single log file. Could you edit your message, delete the two parts and upload the ZIPPED log? It helps save a (virtual) tree or two... ;)

And if the host is Windows 10, make sure Hyper-V is not activated...

Yes, my host OS is Windows 10 1703 x64
I checked and Hyper-V is already disabled

What crashes? The VM or VirtualBox?

I see three reboots, which I assume is from the effort to install WinXP:
00:00:16.205120 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM...
00:02:14.245392 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM...
00:09:43.192595 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM...
At the 3rd time, after a while there is a barrage of the same message, 367 of them in the span of ~15 sec:
00:10:38.099697 ERROR [COM]: aRC=VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80bb0005) aIID={ee35adb0-4748-3e12-e7fd-5aad957bba0f}
aComponent={MouseWrap} aText={Could not send the mouse event to the virtual mouse
                (VERR_PDM_NO_QUEUE_ITEMS)}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0
...
00:11:03.934590 ERROR [COM]: aRC=VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80bb0005) aIID={ee35adb0-4748-3e12-e7fd-5aad957bba0f}
aComponent={MouseWrap} aText={Could not send the mouse event to the virtual mouse
                (VERR_PDM_NO_QUEUE_ITEMS)}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0
Now, all the references about the message "Could not send the mouse event to the virtual mouse (VERR_PDM_NO_QUEUE_ITEMS)" are more than 9 years old, and I don't honestly think that they apply. But, could you please lower your RAM to the guest from 4 GB to 2 GB or less? WinXP-32bit cannot even see anything more than ~3.5 GB in any event.

And finally, where did you get the 'WB2PFRE_FR_SP3.ISO' from?

The VM, because after this message, the VM is aborted and I go back to the machine manager.
But, could you please lower your RAM to the guest from 4 GB to 2 GB or less? WinXP-32bit cannot even see anything more than ~3.5 GB in any event.
I lowered the RAM at 2 GB and I reinstalled the geust OS, it works, but when I tried to install the guest additions, the same message appeared again.
And finally, where did you get the 'WB2PFRE_FR_SP3.ISO' from?
It's an ISO from a Windows XP Pro x32 Corporate Edition CD that I own.

Also, I have another ISO that I could try, and I also have another PC (Same Windows version) where I can install Virtualbox and test this VM.

UPDATE : I tried with another ISO, and it"s the same problem.

Yes, I wasn't expecting it to go away, I don't believe it's not a guest problem, I believe it's a host problem.

Do you have any antivirus, debuggers, emulators, low-level system utilities running in your system?

Yes. here's the list fo the programs that always run in my system :
- Bitdefender Antivirus plus 2017
- Malwarebytes
- Teamviewer
- Razer Synapse

UPDATE : By curiosity, I tested to set the VM on another computer with the same version of Windows host and VBox, and it's the same problem with the same message.

Check to see if they use any sort of hardware acceleration and disable it. If it doesn't work uninstall them. The reason is that they use Hyper-V for their hardware acceleration and that may kill other hypervisors.

If they're running the same software, it's no surprise.

Please, anyone has an idea of what causing this problem ?
I can't set any Windows XP VM on both of my 2 hosts computer because of this, and it starts to really piss me off.

Please, anyone ?
Don't tell me I'm the only person who has this problem with 2 different ISOs on 2 different host machines ?
I did everything. I completely removed most of my running apps on my computer and it's the same thing.
Why does it works on another virtualization software ? Does that mean that Virtualbox is complete garbage ?

I have removed the profanity laced post and subsequent follow ups. Keep it civil or I will lock the thread. Someone may help but this is not a contract for service forum. It is just users trying to help other users. You can always file a ticket at bugtracker if you feel this is a bug or purchase a service contract from Oracle if you want support.

I would try to help you myself but I don't use Windows at all. Just remember to keep it civil.
