Looks like a success ...
(speaking for the Windows version)
I'm on 5.1.25 now (incl. extension pack) and everything runs smooth as it used to... Including audio ...
I'll have an eye on it the next few days.
I installed build 117099 on my Win7 64-bit host and no more excessive memory usage for me, either.
Thanks to michael and pentagonik for the quick diagnosis and fix, and thanks especially to Haeckli for his thorough and detailed reporting, and for living in a timezone half a day ahead of me. I'm kinda embarrassed that a problem I reported was essentially fixed as I slept, though I probably wouldn't have been nearly as useful as Haeckli. He's the sort of user open-source developers dream about.

Thx for the compliments, evanb... its just my small contribution to a software I use for free since so many years and which I dont't ever want to miss...
Just as a reminder that the "absorb all memory" issue also happens on Solaris hosts running a Windows 7 x86-64 guest.
Installing 5.1.25 to confirm fix.
One thing I remembered was that the memory issue didn't occur when I booted to safe mode to install the guest additions, nor when I did the same to revert to the 5.1.22 release.
The checksum of the test builds are not typically published. But if it helps you, here's what I get with the r117099 ExtPack:
$ shasum -a 256 Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.25-117099.vbox-extpack

Forgot to specify: I usually check the checksum by means of HashTab http://soft.oszone.net/program/7497/HashTab/, it does not support sha256. Or I would like to know if version 5.1.26 will be released soon?

I doubt that 5.1.26 will be released soon, given that 5.1.24 was released a day ago. It's not unprecedented, but we'll have to wait and see, the developers never disclose that information. For the record, the shortest period in between releases was 7 days.
But please let's not dilute this discussion from it's really important troubleshooting process. If you have general questions about the release process, the versions and checksum, please open a new thread in "Using VirtualBox".

You could always try the "generic" Linux version until one comes out...

Same excessive memory use problem,
Sun Fire X4540 solaris 11.3 0.5.11-0.175.3.22.0.3.0, VBOX 5.1.24 build 117012(and extpack) and a Windows 10 1703 build 15063.48.3. client.
It took all the 32GB (6674M in 5.1.22). Giving the no more processes
Please try the current test builds. Test builds are considered stable enough for every day use, and if they contain a fix you need we actively encourage you to use them instead of the matching release.

I could but I have an aversion to installing unpackaged software for a whole host of reasons. I was hoping to test it before doing some bisecting. I was trying to test the EL7 version in VM but seem to be facing a issue running 64bit nested guests.
