Third-party software ask again for registration

Post by jcdole »

I have a windows XP VM that i use to use on a linux hosts.
Two days ago I have to use that VM on a windows 10 laptop.
The machine uuid and the harddisk uuid are unchanged.
When I started the third-party software, it asks me for registration.

I have already register for that software on the linux hosts.

Any help is welcome.

You need to ask the third party software vendors that question.

While running in a VM does obscure some features of the host hardware, it does not for example hide the CPU, and it is also easy for the software to detect that it's running in a VM. What it does with this information is entirely up to the guest software, so if you object to what it does then you need to speak to the people who wrote the third party software.

Do you mean that one can calculate some checksum depending of the real hardware ?

Among other things, yes.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Mainly the CPU. Also if you don't move a VM properly then you can inadvertantly cause many changes to the VM hardware. For example, a lot of users have a fixation on the hard drive and think the VDI is the only file that matters, so that's the only file they copy. In effect then they have to recreate the motherboard completely, every time they move the VM. Obviously this can cause many problems, activation being the least of them.

I have added this info as a benefit to readers, I'm aware that your first post implies that you understand at least some of this already, e.g. that the motherboard has a UUID.
