[Solved]need more space in a data disk

Post by Fielding »

I have a virtual machine with three internal drives.
One of them , a data drive, has become small and I need more space.
How can I make bigger with the last version of VB ?

Best Regards

Resize the drive with CloneVDI, or following the official solution: Howto: Resize a Virtual Drive.

When I was ready to retake this post I can't boot the virtual machines.

I will continue with this as soon I finish my recent problem.

I open other post for this purpose.

Att. mpack

I am failing in the execution of CloneVDI.exe
So I am doing bad.
I would like to know the correct system.
I have revised the program documentation. It's not clear for me.
Now what I had intented to do without success.

I have a copy of a virtual machine with three internal virtual disks.
The system disk and two data disk
I try to make bigger one of the data disks from 10.00 GB to 20.00 GB.

host windows 8.1
guest windows xp
in the configuration the new disk appear with 20. GB.
but when open the virtual machine the size continues with 10 GB

What's next to change really the size of the virtual disk vdi ?

Best Regards

Read the next part of the article that mpack linked to. Step 2 from How to resize a Virtual Drive.

PS. Please do not post your whole desktop, crop it to the area of interest. And attach it locally if you can.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

The documention that comes with CloneVDI (the README.TXT) is already my best attempt to explain how to use CloneVDI. If you don't understand it then I don't see what else I can do: e.g. I don't see what would be gained by repeating the instructions here. If CloneVDI is too complex for you then it looks like the VBoxManage FAQ route is your only option (though personally I'd have thought that a GUI was easier for a novice to understand).

Hint: you either are using snapshots or you should have ticked that "Increase partition size" option in the CloneVDI dialog.

My problem is solved by my own means in two ways :

I will put screenshots :

1 st method :

Experimenting with mpack software. I create a clone of 20.00 GB disk4.vdi.
With the virtual machine closed in the storage settings section
Over the ide secondary slave (or the disk you want to make bigger...) ... choose disk image and select the clone you have created.

Through the hard disk manager from inside the guest assign or extend the volume and change hard drive letters if you wish.

Note : This virtual machine is not the target one. This virtual machine has ten snapshots.
If any sensible data in the disk I can move or copy to another hard drive provisionally. Just because the disk to make bigger only contain data.

2 nd method

Create a new virtual drive of the size desired. Dinamical new virtual hard drive. Then change the letters according your purpose and copy if necessary from the original data hard disk file.

I suppose with a partitioning program i can make a single partition , not the extended volume I didn't work in the past.

No, it isn't. This is a user discussion forum, not a help forum. There's a big difference. For example, none of us are Oracle employees, and none of us are obligated to help you. I suggest that you bear this in mind.

Besides which, to paraphrase my earlier post, if 44K of written instructions is not sufficient help for you then I don't know what is: read the instructions and tell me about the bits you don't understand. If you don't read English too well then perhaps you can copy and paste the text into a web form and translate it. Or perhaps in future I'll provide the "readme" in html form.

Second Method.

In my system under IDE controller I only can create three virtual disks. so i can copy the old content to another drive and un attach the old one disk.
Create a new one with the desired size and after inside the virtual machine initialize the new hardware and assign the letter you wish and give name to the volume.

That all i need to do to make bigger a hard drive when some tools seems not to be the appropiated tool.

I'm not quite sure what you're doing. You seem to be providing an OS specific mixed language tutorial for something already covered by a FAQ?
