How to update to latest version of GuestAdditions

Post by Docfxit »

I was running Vbox 4.3.12
I installed Vbox 5.1.14
I started Vbox Guest Win7 32bit, Selected Devices, Selected Insert Guest Additions CD image.
In the bottom right corner of the Guest it says Virtual Box Guest Additions 4.3.12
I don't understand why it didn't update.
The Host is Win7 32bit.

You inserted the CD. Fine. Now you got to run the actual installer. Apparently you have "autorun" off. So, open the CD and run "VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe".
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I can't fine the file VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe
I downloaded VirtualBox-5.1.14-112924-Win.exe and installed it.
I don't have a CD/ISO file.
Where can I find the file?

Running Win7 32bit host
Win7 32bit client

You have already answered your own question:
Docfxit wrote:I started Vbox Guest Win7 32bit, Selected Devices, Selected Insert Guest Additions CD image.
That should put the Guest Additions CD into your virtual CD drive in the guest. The end.

I'm sorry for you having to repeat yourself.
I don't understand what I am supposed to do.
I don't see how to open the CD inside the Guest.
I have located the C:\Program Files\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso On the Host
I have copied all the files from the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso to a folder.
I have run the VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe on the host with the Guest stopped.

I am getting errors:

I know you know this like the back of your hand. If I'm supposed to run this inside of the Guest, I'd like to know how to do that?

Thank you,

In your guest OS open your file explorer, so you can see the guest's drives and folders and files. Open "Computer" (I think that's what MS is calling it in 7). In this folder will be the guest's disk drives. One of them, likely the D drive, is the guest's virtual CD drive with the Guest Additions "CD" in it. Run the Guest Additions installer.

Thank you for the reply...

I don't see the CD drive:
I'm guessing It should be in here:
VBoxSettingsStorage.jpg
I'm guessing that's where you have the CD drive listed.
I was successful in installing it by:
Starting Guest
Exploring the shared folder of my host
Navigating to the folder I copied all the files from the ISO into.
Running VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe from there.

Thank you very much,

Docfxit

"I don't see the CD drive"

Presumably the screen grab you've posted showing an IDE Controller, with an Empty Drive attached (indicated by something that looks remarkably like a CD/DVD icon) didn't remind you of anything.

How true, erdeslawe!

Doc, This is the guest's CD drive in the main Virtualbox window:
cd drive 2.png
cd drive 2.png (122.15 KiB) Viewed 3002 times
It is empty now. After you use the "Insert Guest Additions CD image" the Guest Additions ISO will load into this CD drive, and inside your guest as shown in my screenshot above erdeslawe's post, you will find the Guest Additions CD loaded inside the guest. Open it and run the Guest Additions .exe.

See section 4.2.1.1. "Installation" in the manual.

Well intentioned but unhelpful post deleted: the correct way to mount the Guest Additions CD is to choose the "Devices|Insert Guest Additions CD..." from the VM menu. Then inside the guest you navigate to the CD drive and run the installer as mentioned above.

If Autorun had been enabled in the guest then the installer would run automatically, however autorun is usually disabled in a modern OS for safety (malware) reasons, and should be left disabled.
