Newly using the VirtualBox (great product though!).
I install VirtualBox-5.1.8-111374-Win on a Windows 8.1 HOST. The network adapter is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and direct connected to a router Cisco WRT320N
Created a VM using Windows 2008 R2. Assign an IP address of 192.168.1.102, the Default gateway is 192.168.1.1. Using the Internet provider DNS addresses
The server Network info on the VM VirtualBox Manager is:
Attached to: NAT
Adapter Type: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM)
Checked: Cable Connected
I am unable to ping the default gateway, therefore cannot access the internet.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
If you want the vm to be in the same network as the router you will need to use bridged mode networking, not NAT. See Chapter 6 in the manual.

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
Virtualbox NAT has a 10.0.2.### range. The static IP and gateway you chose for your guest aren't compatible. Go Bridged, as Bill suggests, or go back to DHCP-served IP in the guest.MarioA wrote:Windows 2008 R2. Assign an IP address of 192.168.1.102, the Default gateway is 192.168.1.1. . . . Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
"Name" is the physical network card in your host PC the guest will connect to.
Also, in case you end up wondering, "Adapter Type" is the virtual network card your guest will see. If your guest did not complain of finding hardware it did not have drivers for, than don't change this dropdown.

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
Hi - trying to learn how to setup the network!
For Bridged Adapter , how do I set the field Name: the value is Not selected.
Thank you

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
Is there anything else listed when you click the "Name" dropdown?
Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
Just the value Not selected.
There are not other entries!.

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
OK, I suspect, then, that a Virtualbox setting on the physical network card in your PC is not turned on.
Go to Comtrol Panel, Network and Sharing Center. On the right, click Change Adapter Settings. Right-click the network adapter your physical network is connected to, and choose Properties. In the popup window there will be a box with a list, and checkboxes before each list item. These are the "bindings" that are connected to the network card. If there is a Virtualbox Bridged Networking Driver there that is not checked, check it. Reboot the host, and look at the Name dropdown again.

Re: Unable to ping Default Gateway from VM
I uninstall and install the VirtualBox software. This time the Network Adapter name is displayed.
Thank you all
