Installing Win 2000

Post by Tanika »

I'm running windows 7 (64 bit), when I try and install windows 2000 from my VM host drive 'D' I get the following message from windows 7:
"This CD ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled"
Plse advise how to bypass this so that I can install windows 2000.

Well, I assume you weren't planning to overwrite your host OS anyway, so you can ignore what the host OS says about the CD.

On the other hand you should not ignore what is said in sections 1.7 and 1.8 of the user manual: Creating your first Virtual Machine.

Problem is it blanks out functionality of the Win2000 CD, i.e. I cant install anything because the setup files are not functioning!!

Follow the instructions in the user manual. The error you describe means you are not already doing so.

You run the setup files in the VM, not on your host. Happily your host OS is smart enough not you let you do that.

Followed step by step installation (from the manual) of the guest operating
system (in this case windows 2000 - the usual win2000 blue screen inside the
VM), I get the following message:

Windows 2000 Professional Setup
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
Setup has determined that your computer's startup disk is new or has been
erased, or that your computer is running an operating system that is
incompatible with windows 2000.

If the hard disk is new or has been erased, or if you want to discard its
current contents, you can choose to continue setup.

If your computer is running an operating system that is incompatible with
windows 2000, continuing setup may damage or destroy the existing operating
system.

* To continue setup press C - CAUTION: Any data currently on your computers
startup hard disk will be lost

It is talking about your virtual hard drive, not the actual physical computer hard drive. You can go ahead and continue.
