Re: [Solved] Instruction at 0x... referenced memory at 0x.. The memory could not be read

Post by DW55 »

Hi mpack,

I updated VBManager to Version 5.1.4 r110228 (Qt5.5.1) and also installed the latest Guest Additions. Unfortunately, I'm getting the same exact message:

Instruction at 0x00007FFB355C278E referenced memory at 0x10 The memory could not be read.

This happens after only 10-15 minutes, and other times after an hour or more.

I also notice when I power down the physical machine at the end of the day, I see an "Exception Breakpoint" window which says, "A breakpoint has been reached 0x... occurred in the application at location 0x..." "Check OK to terminate the program. Virtual Box Manager has stopped working"

When I turn the power back on and launch the VM, I see, "Scanning and repairing drive (C:)" and a progress indicator.

Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas? Would it help if I upload another log? If so, which log would be best (log name and location)?

Very frustrating...

This is second of two successive posts.

When I installed the v5.1.4 update to VBManager and launched it, a pop-up offered to fetch the updated extension pack. I agreed, and I did see the VB Info window that said, "The extension pack v5.1.4r110228 was installed successfully." As reported above, I later got the invalid memory address error and was forced to abort the VM...

Here's the new info: Just now, when I started the VM again, a pop-up said I was still using the older version of the extension pack. There was no offer of automatic download and install. Instead, I visited https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and explicitly downloaded the following:

Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.4-110228.vbox-extpack

I executed that program, and again saw the same success message:

"The extension pack v5.1.4r110228 was installed successfully."

I see no indication that the extension pack subsequently uninstalls itself or throws any other abnormal indication. Also, this is the first time I've seen the message saying that I'm using an older version of the extension pack. Nevertheless, could the problem be that some part of the extension pack is being corrupted or not being properly registered?

Thank you for your help,

Until someone else reports this problem I'm going to declare that this is a issue with a driver on your PC, not a VirtualBox problem.

The VirtualBox software and the extension pack are a matched pair. They should always be updated together. However it's a non-sequiter to say that "I also installed the latest Guest Additions". The Guest Additions are not matched to a particular host version (they just shouldn't be newer), plus each guest has to be updated separately, so there is no singular operation which updates the GAs.

Believe this is the bug ticket for this issue: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15795

Btw, I have no extension packs, VirtualBox installed without Host-only and Bridged networking......(all install options are off except just VB).

Some report this to do with Windows Audio.

Until someone else reports this problem I'm going to declare that this is a issue with a driver on your PC, not a VirtualBox problem.
I showed you all the drivers on this VM. Here they are again:

Code: Select all

R1 ElRawDisk; C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\rsdrvx64.sys [26024 2009-02-12] (EldoS Corporation)
R0 VBoxGuest; C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\VBoxGuest.sys [164856 2016-07-21] (Oracle Corporation)
R3 VBoxMouse; C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\VBoxMouse.sys [129504 2016-07-21] (Oracle Corporation)
R1 VBoxSF; C:\Windows\System32\drivers\VBoxSF.sys [292728 2016-07-21] (Oracle Corporation)
R3 VBoxVideoW8; C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\VBoxVideoW8.sys [308784 2016-07-21] (Oracle Corporation)
S0 WdBoot; C:\Windows\System32\drivers\WdBoot.sys [44568 2015-10-30] (Microsoft Corporation)
R0 WdFilter; C:\Windows\System32\drivers\WdFilter.sys [293216 2015-10-30] (Microsoft Corporation)
R3 WdNisDrv; C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\WdNisDrv.sys [118112 2015-10-30] (Microsoft Corporation)
However it's a non-sequiter to say that "I also installed the latest Guest Additions".
OK, I probably used the wrong terminology. Because of unfamiliarity, I thought "guest additions" is a synonym for "extension pack". I should have said I downloaded and executed the following two programs:
VirtualBox-5.1.4-110228-Win.exe (this one first)
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.4-110228.vbox-extpack (then this one)
each guest has to be updated separately, so there is no singular operation which updates the GAs.
This computer has only one VM on it.

If you still think the problem is with one or more of my drivers, please tell me which one(s) of the following drivers is/are faulty:

Re: [Solved] Instruction at 0x... referenced memory at 0x.. The memory could not be read

Post by DW55 »

Hello,

While awaiting a reply, I discovered an available update for the graphics adapter on the physical machine. I updated to the latest NVIDIA driver, and rebooted the PC. I still get the invalid memory reference error at random times while using the VM.

I see 18 previous hits on Google search for the following search criterion:

Instruction at 0x... referenced memory at 0x.. The memory could not be read site:virtualbox.org

In those cases where some resolution was found, the fix was to update to a newer version of VBManager. As I said previously, I am using VBManager Version 5.1.4 r110228 (Qt5.5.1) and Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.4-110228.vbox-extpack

Thank you for any help.

I previously mentioned that 5.1.4 solved the issue for me but after some more days I can tell it is not a final solution yet. VM's sometimes freeze, Especially when setting up a new w8.1 vm I got a stalled vm several times. Rebooting windows 10 (anniversary update) solved the issue.
On one VM where I use serial port COM1 coupled to the host's COM3 I encountered the memory error when shutting down.

@DW : what OS are you on (forgive me you may have mentioned it but I did not see that right away)

I'm strongly suspecting the buggiest windows version ever: windows 10 anniversary update

@clipper87

Both the host and the VM are running 64x Win10 (not Anniversary edition). I posted a log file in Post #1 above. I don't know how to read it, but I think the details of my rig are included in the log.

@danf84

This VM was originally the version that was current on July 30th. It's now V5.1.4. I've been getting the memory addressing problem in both versions. I'd hate to downgrade. The developers spent considerable effort trying to improve the product. I don't want to give that up.

Thank you for your interest.

I have the same crash issue on my Dell Latitude E7470 with 24 GB of Ram with all 5.1.0, 5.1.2 and 5.1.4. with Windows 10 Entreprise 1511 as host and Windows 10 Pro 1607 as guest, both x64.
I am using bridge network, VT/x, PAE/NX, HyperV paravirtualization; I affected 2 CPU in the guest from the 4 logical cores in the host (i5-6300U = dual core cpu with HT).
I had the most crashes with 5.1.2. Tried in mid August to upgrade to .4 but after another crash downgraded back to 5.1.0.
Since I still had some crash with 5.1.0 (see attachment for log files), and another one this morning, I upgraded again to 5.1.4 and disabled the audio completely (as I read in the bug tracker it could be related). I also upgraded my bios 2 days ago. Let see if this combination will be better...

Unfortunately, I just had a crash again with 5.1.4 and audio disabled. Log files attached.
This VM is my main development environment. It's very annoying to have it crash and partially loose my work!

FWIW, I had similar issues with the entire 5.1.x line of VB manager. I have a Windows 7 Pro host running a Windows 7 Pro guest. After upgrading to 5.1.0, I started seeing issues with these crashes as you describe. I finally traced it back to relating to the audio somehow. I went through all of the 5.1.x upgrades all the way up to 5.1.6, and while the memory crashes became more infrequent, the audio never performed acceptably in the guest. For ANY streaming video in a browser such as YouTube, the audio ALWAYS lagged the video by a second or more. If I paused the video and then attempted to replay it, the audio went into full stutter/freeze mode. The only "remedy" would be to close the browser and start over, but the audio-to-video lag problem still existed.

Also, after upgrading to the 5.1.x line, my Windows Update service in my windows guest started exhibiting the dreaded eternally-checking-for-updates-and-consuming-50%-of-available-cpu problem.

Today I finally punted and rolled back to VB manager 5.0.26. Sure enough, ALL of these problems have gone away in the guest after the rollback. Audio/video latency is gone, no memory crashes, and the Windows Update service in the guest is behaving as expected. For now I have no reason to upgrade to the 5.1.x line, as 5.0.26 is stable for me. I'm not sure if there's something going on with the Intel HD Audio emulator in 5.1.x, or if it's something else, or a combination of things. I've been using VB for years, and this is definitely the most serious stability issue I've encountered with it. Hopefully Oracle will get it resolved.

The silver lining here is that 5.0.26 seems to be stable and works great for me. If it's an option for you, perhaps you could try rolling back to this version and seeing if it helps.

Still on 5.1.4 and audio disabled on my Dell Latitude 7470, I recently upgraded the Intel graphic drivers to the last available on DELL support.
I had no crash of VB so far, and also no crash anymore of my docking station.

EDIT: The driver update did NOT solve the issue, I got another crash yesderday :(
EDIT2: and again with 5.1.6. I am switching to HyperV.

I'm running the newest VirtualBox 5.1.22 on Win10 64bit (Debian Linux 4.9.0 stretch guest with Linux guest additions) and

I get this error "(VirtualBox.exe) Instruction at 0x000.. referenced at 0x00..0028. The memory could not be read."
