5.0.14: installation woes on win 10

Post by cosmik »

Got a Windows 7 Pro 32-bit client connected to Active Directory, that was running Virtualbox for ages. No issues, after installing a multitude of Vbox versions, up to one of the first 5.x releases.

The client was upgraded to Windows 10 32-bit. I was having some issues and thought that Vbox might be the culrpit. So I uninstalled it and tried to install 5.0.14.

It failed miserably. Specifically the installation started, UAC asked me if I wanted to install, I selected the wanted components (IIRC, only excluded python) and after pressing install the operation started but did not finish. Some time later on, I received an error.

Then I stumbled into MSI_Logging wiki. After enabling LogLevel I started the installation again. This time, it went like a charm! Ok, I thought, something to do with the logging. So I resetted LogLevel to 0x20004001 and launched Vbox. I was asked to install/upgrade the extension pack. I selected yes. And the same thing happened. The extension box installation progress remains stuck at 0%...

I've re-configured the LogLevel to 0x4800FFFF, but no logs are recorded in Windows\inf this time.

For the record, one other system that also ran vbox without issues on Win 7, exhibits the exact same symptoms under Win 10...

Can someone help? Bad thing is that I don't have anything concrete, like install logs at hand...

Moved to "Windows Hosts".

I suggest that you also read the last page or two of posts in Discuss the 5.0.14 release.

I did read the thread you're referencing, however I do not have any invalid signature issues. It's that the installation stalls without any apparent reason...

I would uninstall VirtualBox, make sure that the "c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox" is gone. Then try installing 5.0.14 again. Not any older version, because support for Windows 10 hosts is a very recent innovation.

Tried to uninstall Virtualbox. Same issue.

Can I help the developers by enabling some sort of logging here during my uninstallation efforts? If so, how exactly, via setting LogLevel?

I have the same problem. The installer is stuck at about 80%, doing nothing.

I've tried all sorts of things - deleting the Program Files location, removing it from the registry, etc etc.

I now seem to have resolved this. I ran the installer as Administrator, via the right click context menu.

IIRC it did not help in my case...

I will open a bug report for the deinstallation case, hopefully devs might be able to get to it.

5.0.1.6: Reset system and reinstalled Windows 10

Post by dmatt »

Recently upgraded to Windows 10 64 bit system wipe clean drive C; reformated and reinstalled all files and added Virtual Box 5.0.16 (released 2016-03-04) to the drive no problems, after all, that, work fine now.

Suggestion: Virtual Box (any version) doesn't do to well with Windows Insider Program with all its changes. :| : wink:
