Unable to select Optical Drive ISO file

Post by itm »

I am having problems selecting an ISO file as the optical drive for ANY of my VMs (both newly-created and existing VMs).

When I go to the Storage section of Settings, select the IDE controller, then click on the dropdown to select an ISO file for the optical drive, the machine just hangs for a few minutes, then responds as though I had never clicked it in the first place (i.e. I am never taken to a selection dialog to select a file).

If I remove the IDE controller altogether, add an optical drive to the SATA controller, select the ISO, then start the VM I get "Failed to open a session for the virtual machine", with details as below:

Code: Select all

The device helper structure version has changed.
If you have upgraded VirtualBox recently, please make sure you have terminated all VMs and upgraded any extension packs. If this error persists, try re-installing VirtualBox. (VERR_PDM_DEVHLPR3_VERSION_MISMATCH).
Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}
I am running VirtualBox v5.0.14r on Windows 7, but was also having the same problem with v 5.0.10 (I upgraded VirtualBox hoping that the problem would go away).

Any idea how I can resolve this?

Did you do both of these things? I'm asking because typically the error VERR_PDM_DEVHLPR3_VERSION_MISMATCH comes between a version mismatch between the VirtualBox main program and the Extension Pack. Make sure that the versions between these two are exactly the same.

If yes, then please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance. As far as the "VBox.log.zip" goes, here's what you do:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended start. Clean start.
  2. Take the steps required to generate the error.
  3. Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself). Not suspend, not pause. Shut down.
  4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
  5. Select "Show Log..."
  6. Save it, ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
