NAT DNS/DHCP not working.

Post by TomBr »

Hi guys,

I'm new to virtual machine's but when setting up my Virtual Box + VM's I've encountered an issue regarding a NAT Networking connection.
I should be able to connect to the internet on my VM which is connected through NAT. But somehow the DNS doesn't resolve names.

My guest OS is not able to surf the internet. I cannot ping to websites either.

Host:
Windows 8.1 Pro + VirtualBox 5.0.14
Network Connection: (Fixed IP + Fixed DNS)

Guest:
Windows 7
Connected Through NAT
IP: 10.0.2.15
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DHCP: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (Same as the fixed one set to my host OS)

If I made any mistake by posting this question. Feel free to correct my mistake. If any more information is required please instruct me.

Your guest seems to have been assigned a NAT IP address, so why do you say that DHCP isn't working?

If you are configuring your own DNS on the host then I doubt that it should have a 8.x address. What network is that part of?

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 are the official DNS servers from Google, usable by everyone with Internet access ;)

I see, thanks. It's still an odd address. @Tom: I take it that your host browser is working with this setup?

Yes my host OS is setup with the following settings:

IP: 192.168.0.120
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (IPv6 DNS settings is also configured for Google DNS settings).

The problem is that my guest OS has everything on automatic settings. (See original post for the whole setup)

But I still cannot browse or ping any website from the guest.

Thanks for the quick response!

BullGuard Internet security seems to be the cumprit as to blocking NAT connections. Trying to figure out what 's going wrong.
