Can't get more than 1024x768 screen after upgrading to 1.6.2

Post by dalewking »

Host: Windows XP SP3
Guest: Mandriva Linux Spring 2008 running KDE

Under VBox 1.6.0 it would sometimes revert to a lower screen resolution, but I could usually go to XFdrake and get it to a higher resolution.

Once I upgraded to VBox 1.6.2 it will only give me up to 1024x768. When I go to XFdrake and say that the monitor is a 1280x800 flat panel and set the resolution to that and then hit test it shows me a 1024x768 test screen.

I have tried everything I could find in the forums. Please don't tell me to install the guest additions. They are installed. I have tried the VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution.

No matter what I do I cannot get it bigger than 1024x768. KDE only lists 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480 as choices.

The only resolutions in my xorg.conf is 1280x800.

Please tell me what to try.

OK, it appears the question is what version of guest additions are installed and when.

The urpmi databases for Mandriva have only versions 1.5.6 and 1.6.0 of the virtual box guest addition modules. By default it will default to 1.5.6.

Just installing them from the iso image is not enough. If you removed the old versions using rpmdrake and then install from the iso and then try to set up the video when you select the virtual box video driver in XFdrake it will try to install one from urpmi (likely version 1.5.6).

So if I install the 1.6.0 version from rpm drake and then install 1.6.2 from the ISO I do now get full screen resolution. But now I am battling the dreaded protocol error when trying to mount a shared folder.

But I think this has now drifted from Windows host issue to Linux guest issue so I will move to that forum.
