1.6.2 install failed, now unable to uninstall or install!

I have Sun 1.6.0 installed on my machine, Windows XP, E4500, 4Gb RAM.
Had Solaris 10 u5 installed on it, but not really usable. I noticed that 1.6.2 was available, so fetched that, and tried to install it.

Oops, I forgot to uninstall 1.6.0 first.

The 1.6.2 installation gave a few errors, and rolled back.

So I went to Add/Remove Programs and tried to uninstall what I have.
No go, it rolls back.
Rebooted, tried again.
No go, it rolls back.

Deleted all the files manually and rebooted again, but still no better off,
the 1.6.0 is still there in add/remove progs and won't go away, "remove" starts then rolls back; A 1.6.2 install begins OK, then also errors and rolls back.

I guess I'm stuck with a load of dud registry entries and never to run virtualbox again.

Oh, damn installations and damn the damn registry.
What's wrong with good old simple un-tarring the files in-place
wherever you want them and using a program, then deleting it all when you're done???

I could paste a massive MSI.log file here but it's 350k and that'd be rude.
Here is the bit around where the word "error" appears in that log:

Ed

Hey I suddenly twigged how to fix it.

Went back to the 1.6.0 .msi;
Selected "Repair" instead of "Uninstall". That fixed up the mess I'd made.

That having completed OK, I was then able to uninstall properly, and install 1.6.2.

trying it out with Solaris 10u5 will have to wait until tomorrow...

rolling back?
yep, that is the same issue I had and it is regardless to the version. You won't even be able to "repair" the install. I haven't been able to update VirtualBox since 2.2.0 until JUST NOW, now i have 3.0.2 and can update once again.

:!: :!: :!: REAL SOLUTION: :!: :!: :!:
Go to Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Driver Signing and select Warn - Prompt me each time to choose an action.

Step 1)
Go to:
 Start
 Control Panel
 System
 Hardware
 Driver Signing
 and select Warn - Prompt me each time to choose an action.

"In WinXP, to install VB., use "RUN AS" and be sure to uncheck "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" . You do not need to run as Admin. Well, at least in my case I did not. In VISTA, obviously UAC is the troublemaker. I've got that turned off myself." "-M"

Step 2) (prior to installation or as Repair)
 Right Click .exe
 choose "RUN AS"
 uncheck "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity"

Now when you go to install, it will ask you if you want to continue with non win logo drivers, click "continue" on all the ones that pop up (usually 2 or many) and it will work and install with no problems!

This is the same reason that I was unable to install my digital video camera. Somehow, our default settings got changed and if the install requires it, sometimes it won't even tell you, like VirtualBox install, and it will just abort and not tell you why.
