Vista 64bit host, Win XP guest connection problems

Post by RikoOnWeb »

Hi, I have Virtualbox 1.6 installed on host Vista SP1 64bit system. As a guest I have installed Windows XP SP2. I have the guest connected through host interface that I bridged with my wireless connection. I also changed the MAC address of the virtual network card to match the one of my wireless card. Both the bridge in the host and the network connection in the guest OS are setup for DHCP and automatic DNS configuration, with the exception of preferred DNS on the guest being DNS server on the local network.

With this configuration I am able to connect to the internet and local network from the guest OS but I can't connect to anything (ping ip, dns name or otherwise) from the host. When I turn off the guest, I can connect to the internet from host.

What do I need to do differently to be able to connect to both local network (by ip or dns names) and internet from both guest and host OS? My guess would be that the problem is that both systems are assigned the same IP address.

This is what I get for my bridge connection on the host OS by running ipconfig /all:
Ethernet adapter Network Bridge:

And this is what I get running it on guest:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VirtualBox 1.6.2

Post by RikoOnWeb »

I installed VirtualBox 1.6.2 that was released today, changed the MAC address of virtual network adapter to a unique one and recreated the bridged connection and now it's working as it should. I can see local network and internet from both machines.

Another problem that I had was with using VPN from the guest computer but that might be working now too, I will test it in couple of hours.

EDIT: VPN is working properly now as well.

What worked for me

See my post Bridge is falling down.

I changed the virtual NIC to intel pro server instead of desktop and it fixed the bridging problem.

Hope this works for you.
