No sound - Host Win10 - Guest Win7

Post by Flexmanta »

Hello, here's me with another "no sound" topic.

Virtualbox 5 r101573
Host: Windows 10 build 10240 (RTM?)
Guest: Windows 7 SP1

-I hear no sound coming from the guest.
-In the guest, moving the volume slider or playing a video produces the visual indication in the mixer showing that sound has been played, but it's not audible.
-In the host, audio works perfectly.
-I have tried HD Audio and AC97.
-In the host's audio mixer, I can see a slider corresponding to VirtualBox.
-All volumen sliders have been played with and volume is maxed out.

It's as if the problem is in Direct Sound. Like the guest produces sound, but it's not giving it to the host.

THANKS

I'm having exactly the same problem. With Ubuntu guests too.

Also I'm noticing a very very very bad performance playing videos in the guests.

Anything of that didn't happen with the same VirtualBox version, but Ubuntu host (Windows 10, 7 guests)

I'm having the same no sound problem in the Windows 10 Official Release.

I get no sound from my guests in my Windows 10 host.
Virtualbox 5 r101573
Host: Windows 10 build 10240 OR all updates to date.
Guest: Windows XP SP3 + all updates to date.
Guest: Windows 10 build 10240 OR all updates to date.

These same guest VM's work fine in my Windows 8.1 host.
Virtualbox 5 r101573
Host: Windows 8.1 all updates to date.
Guest: Windows XP SP3 + all updates to date.
Guest: Windows 10 build 10240 OR all updates to date.

I've tried all the same adjustments to fix the problem.

Maybe VirtualBox is not fully communicating with Windows 10 because something has changed from Windows 8.1.
OR
Maybe Windows 10 is still buggy and is not handling virtualization correctly.

A fix or workaround would be greatly appreciated!

Confirming the same problem here on Windows 10 host, trying to use Arch Linux and Fedora Linux guests. It seems to be completely random but sound will rarely work, other times checking the logs produces the following line:

Code: Select all

00:02:50.486474 DSound: playback start E_ACCESSDENIED
This line seems to appear anytime I try to play a sound within the guest OS. I have disabled "Exclusive mode" in my sound device properties.

I've the same problem. Does not work on Linux 32 or 64 or Windows 32 and 64 guests.
It worked for a short while right after the Windows 10 upgrade.
I was watching a local Video and the Sound went out and it hasn't worked on itr or any of the other VM's since.
I first upgraded Virtual box to the latest 4.x and extensions. That had same results.
I then upgraded to VirtualBox 5.x Same results.
In examining one linux box I have changed the card... The only one that doesn't seem to stall and die is Soundblaster... (But that is a dummy as it is not in the kernel)
Either of the other cards is recognized by the Guest OS but stalls... (Even Video Stalls.)
I'm thinking Windows 10 might have pushed me some wonderful upgrade.

It looks like the "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081424)" has fixed the no sound problem that VirtualBox is having.

Also, Windows 10 comes with DirectX 12, but it seems that the Windows 10 upgrade does not always install previous versions of DirectX which are needed for the apps and programs that use them.

Until the no sound issue is resolved you can try the following workaround - https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/14361#comment:12

yes is working fine..BUT..:

anyway i'd like to underline that the issue -no sound- and its workaround is very very UPSETTING
cause if you think a little bit deeper:
you are able to do that cause there is a -hole- between yr host, win 10 and your starting for ex a youtube video,
and yr guest that at that point is able to let you hear the sound and to play video in flash..
are you realizing what it MEANS..
this is the very OPPOSITE meaning of using a virtualized app...
i mean the main aim of virtualize is moreover NOT to have that HOLE = BUG....

i really hope VB dev's really think of all of this ashaming upsetting experience

1. It appears the update did not fix the problem. That is why I qualified my comment with the words, "It looks like..." Right now that it LOOKS like it needs a permanent fix.

2. I have no suggestions for DirectX. :/ I've heard that Windows 10 does not install previous versions of DirectX and that previous versions should be downloaded and installed. I have NOT VERIFIED that.
