How to install and run VB on WinPE 1.0 / VistPE / WinPE 2.0

Post by windrv »

Anybody knows if this can be done or VB works under WinPE 1.0 / VistaPE / WinPE 2.0?

Thanks a lot.

WinPE is a Windows 2000, NT, XP, 2003, which runs from CD directly - like a live Linux. You can try BartPE: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/.
(PE stands for Preinstalled Environment)

AHH OK - Well this is very tricky one.

The problem is the VirtualBox uses kernel drivers, which means that in order for it to run from LiveCD - VirtualBox must be pre-installed *before* LiveCD creation. VirtualBox requires restart after installation, so you can't simply add it to liveCD.

VirtualBox does not require a restart anymore. (since 1.4.0)

Could VirtualBox be released in such a form that it can be run without installation in the way QEMU does?

Just release all the necessary files in a zip folder so that people can just click VirtualBox.exe and run it.

That's sort of what I was asking about in another post,

If we knew (okay, we could have a look at the installer code) what registry keys are required in order to run VirtualBox, what system files are exactly needed and which driver entries, we could create a plugin for BartPE. If I got more time I would test this myself.

Okay I have tried, but I failed.

I get an error message TYPE_E_CANTLOADLIBRARY although all the dependecies of VBoxSVC.exe and VirtualBox.exe can be resolved (after installing DirectX and MS Java) and the VirtualBox TypeLib is registered to the registry. I don't know what is going wrong.

Perhaps one can help us in Bart's forum.
