Virtual Disk Problem

Post by t0mas »

I created a dynamically expanding image Virtual Disk Image of 20 GB and when I check the size of it it says 4 GB. The problem is that I have installed a bunch of stuff and now it says the disc is full and it wont even start up.

I really dont want to redo everything, could you please help!

Fat32 File size limit is 4 GB

I had some strange behavior, too, and it took a while to find the reason. Files that are stored on a FAT32-formatted disk (like the pre-format for most portable devices) have a size limit of 4 GB (minus some bytes). So once Virtual Box has inflated the file to this size, the virtual hard drive is full, because the file cannot be further expanded.

You need to put the file on a Windows NTFS-Partition to avoid this behavior.

Good luck with this,
Roland!

That sounds logical, thanks a lot! You saved me a lot of time, I was about to start over with a fixed size virtual disk, but that shouldn't work either if I'm thinking clear.
