[Solved] Missing .msi file after failed install of 4.3.20

Post by Adlib107 »

Hi. I'm using WinXP professional to run Suse 13.1 on VirtualBox 4.3.6. I decided to upgrade to the latest version (4.3.20) but the installation hung just before completion - the progress bar had got to the right hand side, but after an hour's wait nothing further had happened. I tried to reinstall, but this time got a message saying that the file <VirtualBox-4.3.6-r91406-MultiArch_x86.msi> was missing from location <c:\Documents and Settings\<my_name>\Local Settings\Temp\VirtualBox> . I checked; there is no file in that location. The same message appeared when I tried to uninstall 4.3.6 in order to do a clean install of 4.3.20. I'm now stuck with 4.3.6 - not a problem at the moment, but I suspect it will be eventually. Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy of the file to put it in the correct location? Cheers, Adlib107

If I remember correctly the easiest workaround was to just reinstall the old version (4.3.6).
The older builds are available at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds_4_3
After that the upgrade should work again.

Thanks for that. I've downloaded the file and run it; unfortunately, as soon as the file is run, the same message about the same missing file appears, and the installation cannot continue.

ISTR there are instructions in the manual for unpacking the installer exe to get the MSI files, then you could put the appropriate one in the necessary location.

I had this problem with 4.3.22. My solution was to open the folder in which the installer was looking for the 'VirtualBox-4.3.6-r91406-MultiArch_amd64.msi' file, run the 4.3.6 installer, which then generated the required file, copied this file to another location and cancelled the install, which deleted the first .msi file. I then copied my copy of the .msi file to the required folder and ran the 4.3.22 installer. All good. Delete the copied .msi file.

One of the way to deal with this is to download the same version of VirtualBox.exe and then you will get the prompt to either Repair or Remove it. I found it the easiest fix. It worked for me when accidently, I deleted the .msi file.

Hope this will help,

Those that post on older topics are wise to read the topic first, Aeraes. Mpack's post above is what you're looking for, also Martin's link to the installer downloads.
