Everything worked fine for me when I installed the latest virtual box version (4.3.20). I chose "Windows 8.1 (64bit)" as guest OS on my windows 7 (64bit) host

In my case, I changed "Name and operating system" selection in the dropdown list from "Other Windows(64bit)" to "Windows 8.1 (64bit)", since Windows10 (64bit) as guest operating system virtual machine on my Linux host (PCLinuxOS 2014 w/ 3.26.15-1pclos kernel) wasn't listed in Virtual Box (4.3.20_r96996). That fixed my 0x000005d error. Windows 10 on first boot had a problem and suggested I reboot it - I did so, and then Windows 10 (Tech Preview) booted up fine and runs as guest OS.
I could fix this problem with this solution.
I was trying to install windows 8.1 on my macbook pro 13 retina mid 2014.
I tried to change every kinds setting on virtualBox but nothing works.
At the end, I change the "Name and operating system" and choose the right version of windows which is 8.1 and then it works!!
Thanks "Skylakr"!!!!

Yep! Simply changing system type to Windows 8.1 (64-bit) worked like a charm.

Though I did freeze on a purple screen (with build number watermark on bottom right), though I restarted and it works fine.

Thank you so much! I was worried I wasn't going to be able to try out the technical preview.

Hey Guys,

Thank you so much for all the posts!

I wanted to throw in my two cents on how I fixed it and help anyone who's struggling with the fixes here.

My resolution was simply downloading the Windows 10 Enterprise Preview from TechNet.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Many Thanks... I was trying to get this to work and didn't realize that I was using Windows 8 64bit instead of Windows 8.1 64bit... Thank You Skylark!!

I finally got it to start!

Bizarrely, what fixed this issue for me was setting the guest O/S to 'Windows 8.1 (64bit)' - even though I'm totally 32bit.
Colin,

It all depend on the file you downloaded. I'm assuming you downloaded the 64 bit version of Windows 10 ISO. Your laptop somewhat doesn't matter what OS you currently run as long as you have the resources to handle the Virtual OS being installed.
