Possible workaround discovered...

It appears that ubuntu/kubuntu itself has an issue with this particular notebook (HP Compaq 6715s) as seen here:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-499060.html

This might mean that it has nothing to do with virtualbox, but read on...

So I have done some testing and here are the results. Using VirtualBox 1.5.6 with ACPI DISABLED and VT-x ENABLED, I have managed to start installation of Kubuntu 8.04 normally (no more BSOD) . I also tested same settings on same notebook with VirtualBox 1.6.0 and BSOD still appears...

I have no more time to explore is this strictly kubuntu problem and what to do with VB 1.6.0 but if someone has the time, this could be a good starting point...

I also updated bug ticket that I posted about this...

Tested v1.6.2: Works well with VT-x enabled.
Still BSOD with VT-x disabled (problems with atikmdag.sys).

Ticket Closed, but VT-x required or display driver crashes?

Post by jspraul »

VT-x is required still with the new DL3.5-RC4_211008.iso (Dream Linux 3.4 RC5 - http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/download.html) or the ATI video driver crashes.

VirtualBox 2.0.4 on
Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 w/ 4GB RAM
ATI Radeon X1200 (dxdiag reports 1598MB video ram???)
(try a deep link to product specs PDF:

or else click 'Detailed Specs' here:

)

Pretty sure this is the ticket, but it's been closed.

Another topic on this issue:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?p=21106

I have updated my display drivers using Catalyst 8.1 to v7.14 dated 9/23/2008 using the install found here:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catal ... ed-vista32

I will check some other Linux distros over the next few days. I still have a few other things to look into, but I've tried just about everything discussed in both topics concerning this issue.
