That does not work. When I look at the settings of a vm, there are NO USB devices recognized ... the list is empty!! (I click on "add filter from a device" and then it displays "no devices available") so that is even before the vm is started up.
It must be something in the program of virtualbox itself...or whatelse can it be?

You seem to have ignored what I said, which is to plug the device in after the VM has started up. If you simply want to create a filter then make sure the VM is shut down (not suspended) and reboot the host.

I have tried it already several times. So I first started up the vm, and then plugged in a usb stick .... but still virtualbox does not "see" any device at all.Only the host OS sees it.
Plugging and unplugging does not change anything at all.
The only way, is remove Virtualbox, then reinstall it as admin. Then USB devices are working well, but as soon as I close Virtualbox Manager( after I did shutdown all running guests), and restart it, the problems comes back.

The extnsion pack provides all drivers for USB, correct?
So, everytime the host is booted up, virtualbox provides usb to the vm's.
How can I check, if the USB modules/drivers from the extensiopack are really loaded?
It has to do something with loading of the drivers ... how do I know that?... because I made a coppy of the harddisk on to another identical size-disk.
Instead of windows 7, I installed Ubuntu 13.04, installed afterwards virtualbox and NO PROBLEMS AT ALL with USB devices recognized in my VM's...

Thank you for the information.
Before, I worked with VMware, but it costs lots of money, now I am going to experiment further with Virtualbox, since I also want to install it on a Sun server, and experimenting with it how it can be used in a network environment.
Thanks again...!!
Hello guys
I am facing the same issue....
per @hugoh1961 post I installed VBox using 'run as administrator' option, however USB issue persist and guest cannot recognize any usb
either using USB filter on VM settings or a USB devide from 'VM menu/devices/USB devices/' the USB is not recocognized by the guest. when guest try to recognize the USB device, host successfully installs a driver (VBusbDriver) but afterwards nothing happend on the guest and finally the usb device cannot be used on the guest

If I tried once again to assign the UBS to guest a error message pops-up (Failed to attach the USB device JMicron Samsung S2 Portable to the virtual machine Win7x64_Template. USB device 'JMicron Samsung S2 Portable' with UUID {17f5e525-495d-49dd-a1e6-10f853018c65} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.

what could be happening? is there something I am missing?
please help me to get this fixed..
thanks in advance!

Hi,
Since I had too many problems with win7 as host, my new installation is as follows:
- host OS (on ASUS) is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
-Virtualbox guest OS's are: windows 7 - 64b / win8.1 / win 8 / OpenIndiana
Though my problem with Livescribe Echo smartpen still remains. I have installed on the win7 Livescribe desktop longtime ago, and works just fine. Every time I took notes and audio with smartpen, I connect through USB, pen is recognized inside the win7 vm, and data is transferred to the desktop program. Problem is, when there is a software update for the pen, the desktop program downloads it, but installation on the pen does not work, I get everytime the same error that "software update could not be installed, please try to undock and dock your pen again" ... but this isn"t working.
So on the support site of Livescribe, they have a flash utility to install, in case that when updating the pen through the Livescribe Desktop application fails, to update the pen directly.
http://livescribe.custhelp.com/app/answ ... s-smartpen
So after installing it on win 7 guest, it finds the pen, but still fails to do the update. I wonder why, ... is it a win 7 guest problem, or has it to do something with the virtualbox?
On my two other MS guest OS's (win 8 and win 8.1) I don't have the livescribe desktop installed. But installing there the flashutility, then even the pen is not recognized.
On all of the 3 guest MS-OS's, the pen is "seen" on its USB-ports, and can be added to its USB settings, so that is not the problem.... but what could be the cause of this problem which bothers me for a long time now?

I know, a 3-year old thread, but: YGTBFKM!! Same exact issue on Windows 10 pro host OS. I ran an upgrade of VirtualBox and no USB deices were presented. Uninstall virtualbox, then reinstall as administrator and everything was happy.

Yes, it is a 3 year old thread. There were no Windows 10 back then. So, either find a newer thread (preferably after 07/2016) or start a new one. And please do not be shy on the details of the host, guest, VirtualBox version, USB device(s). And a clear description of the problem, including all the error messages. Exactly please.
