Using 8.1 RTM host here. Upon installing network connectivity was lost. Outbound pings just result in ping transmit failed. Uninstalling the program resolves it. I had installed with networking functionality enabled. At this point I do need it working to use Virtualbox.

Just wanted to echo the above posts regarding system shutdown/sleep in 8.1 RTM. Sleeping or shutting down results in the system staying powered for a few minutes with no display and seemingly no disk activity. Eventually it will shut down regardless of the option chosen. Upon booting back up the event log will report that the previous shutdown was unexpected (even if I chose to shutdown) or that it has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. Occasionally a bugcheck report will show error 0x0000009f, but not every time.

Have reinstalled without bridge networking for now.

Thanks guys for the information in this thread. I too also had the issue with Windows 8.1 and hybrid shutdown not working. I pretty much tried everything that could be done and incorrectly thought it was a bios firmware issue on both my computers. (They both have Asrock 990FX mainboards in them.) Leaving the Bridged Network adapter out has fixed the issue for myself as well. At work, I normally leave my computer on 24/7 but I do prefer that everything works the way it should. (I just cannot let problems go for the most part.)

If you guys need any additional info to solve this problem, just let me know.

I am using vbox 4.2.18 r88780 with Guest Additions.
Host: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, 16GB RAM
Guest: Debian Wheezy 64bit, 512MB RAM

1. I can confirm the bridged adapter issue, causing sleep to hang.

2. Also I've got another issue:
After some idle time, I cannot access my Windows shares from the guest. Immediately after booting the guest, it works.

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit (6.3.9600 Build 9600) on a HP EliteBook 8570w (i7-3630QM, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD).

I just installed VirtualBox 4.3.0. At some point I had an BSOD when VirtualBox was running (all of three times within half an hour after I started VB). I uninstalled VirtualBox and all its drivers. Since then, my system appears stable for a couple of hours now. I just assume there is some compatibility issue with Windows 8.1. Before the upgrade to 8.1 I did not have any issues.

What do you think is the best choice for now, try to reinstall 4.3.x or try an older version from the 4.2.x branch?

While you can certainly try it, Windows 8.1 was only released today, so I don't expect that going to older versions of VirtualBox is going to improve compatibility.

I know that 8.1 is very, very recent, and that multiple things will not work (VB is not the only thing giving me trouble).

So far 4.2.18 is working fine for me, I think I'll stick with this version for a while to test it out and report back here. The 4.3.x branch is not for me so far.

I have downloaded the newest version of virutal box, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong?
What I did was install the 32-bit version of the ISO and that worked.

Also, fix posted by "Baxter" on 25 July 2013 works; See below:

http://4sysops.com/forums/topic/windows ... x000000c4/

This worked on my Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3 mobo with 64-bit Win 8.1 Pro RTM today, 20 Oct 2013.

Cheers

Great, the link mentioned above fixed in that way, that I'm now able to launch 2012R2. Great! Perhaps it would be great to have a Guest 2012(64bit) included as well in the host list with this extra settings!!!

In 4.3.2 this not yet included.

Is there any way to get around this without installing without the bridged adapter? I need that in order for my VM to be able to host services for testing.

For example, can we just tweak some settings on the virtual adapter in device manager?

As far as I know, the bridged adapter had nothing to do with it. The solution is to use the "Windows 8.1" template in a version of VirtualBox that dates from after the Win 8.1 release (i.e. 4.3.x or later). Some of the later 4.2.x maintenance releases may also support this template, I've not checked.

I was having sleep problems on 4.3.4. I am going to try to update to 4.3.6 but I imagine it will have the same problems because a fix for this issue is not in the changelog.

I experienced both problems that were described earlier in this thread:
  • Computer fails to go to sleep properly. In my case, it is a Surface Pro 2, which is mostly fanless, resulting in rapid battery drain even though screen is off and it appears to be sleeping.
  • Computer wakes up with all network adapters missing. I think in this case it did manage to go to sleep somehow but after waking up, no network adapters are visible.
EDIT: Turns out that the first bullet above may be confounded with this crap. However, I stress that both have been previously noted in this thread.

I have window 8 as host and windows 7 64 bit as guest, I am unable to access shared folder of windows 7 through the network icon on my windows 8 computer. I have Virtual Box Host-only Network with no internet access. Tried different things but nothing worked. Help will be greatly appreciated.
