Drag 'n drop?

Hi to all!
How is drag 'n drop supposed to work?
I'm using Windows 7 as host and Windows XP as guest: I installed guest additions, enabled drag 'n drop in the options, tried to drag 'n drop a file from host to guest desktop, but it doesn't allow me. :|

... umm... provided the solution doesn't involve searching previous answers or changelogs, evidently.
VirtualBox v4.2.0 changelog wrote:
  • Added experimental support for Drag'n'drop from the host to Linux guests. Support for more guests and for guest-to-host is planned. (bug #81)

The option is there in the VM settings. VirtualBox doesn't really know or care what the guest OS is. The OS question during VM creation just selects a set of default settings, not a different implementation of the VM.

Hi,
I have the drag and drop, and the shared clipboard set to bidirectional. Running XP on a Mac host. Nothing happens. I can drag the file/folder to the virtual xp, but it doesn't stay put. If I copy and paste, the paste option is greyed out in the virtual machine. Am I missing something?

Like mpack wrote a few posts above, this experimental feature currently ONLY works for dragging files from the host to Linux guests...

I think that, as many, I was "deceived" by the fact that drag 'n drop is available as an option for all the VM.

I really rate the VM machine, but wouldn't it be better to make it available to Mac and Windows hosts before Linux?

What most people don't understand is it is far easier to create and adapt options in an open source OS than a closed source OS.
Add to that there are more volunteers and interested individuals that can add or provide code you see the reason. However if you have the ability to write the code for Mac, or Windows the VirtualBox code is available for free download. Post the DnD code for review and inclusion in the trunk and everyone will have it.

Thanks for that PerryImage
I don't have the ability to write this sort of code, so I guess I'll wait with baited breath until the Mac version comes out

Urrgghh. Pet peeve: "bait" is something you catch fish with, and if your breath was reminiscent of that then you would have few friends! You wait with bated breath for something to happen... :) (bated: same root as "abate", i.e. reduced, lessened, held, also think "rebate").
