Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object

Postby bpizzuti » 1. Mar 2012, 22:35

Getting an error after a fresh install of VirtualBox 4.1.8-75467 on one machine...not happening on my laptop though. What COM object might it be talking about? I need to fix this...

Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object.

The application will now terminate.

This usually indicates a failed install or one that had issues. Try installing VirtualBox again and watch for any error messages.

I did, several times, with reboots in between. No difference. If I knew which COM object it was having trouble with I could try and chase it down...

There are several things that can be the issue. Below as some things to check.

What is the host?
.net? There have been issue about needing to update it.
Also look in the Windows event viewer or error reporting if Win 7 and see if it points to an actual event.

Are you logged in as the same user that installed VirtualBox?
When you installed did you install as normal user or admin?

Another thing could be a corrupt VirtualBox.xml file.

System is fully updated, and there's nothing in the event viewer relating to this except for the reboot notices. I've tried both as my logon account (which is a local admin) as well as doing Run As Administrator.

I have NOT tried re-downloading the installer, I'll give that a shot. May need some other ideas though.

Ok that didn't make a difference either. Does anyone have any idea what COM object it's trying to create so I can trace this down? This isn't a terribly informative error message. I'm going to uninstall AVG2012 and give it a shot without that also.

If re-installing does not fix this error then something is either preventing VirtualBox for communicating with the Windows com server or something is blocking it.
The best I could find was it appears to be generated by the Windows host. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library ... 85%29.aspx although no where does it specifically say what to do nor does it specifically say it is a Windows issue. I found a few tickets on bugtracker but they were all because something else changed the registry or another program, although I didn't search the entire database.

I have done as much as I can unless you have more information for me. You could open a ticket at bugtracker and see if the DEVs can help.

I can give you as much information as you want about the PC but "more" is pretty non-specific. As far as this though, that's about it, install, try to run, it spits out the error. The software isn't giving me any more information to give.

That's why I suggested posting at bugtracker. While I am familiar with the source code I am no where near the DEVs. They may know exactly what the issue could be or at least be able to tell you how to debug this in Windows. Please post the ticket number here so others that come across this error can see the resolve.

Another interesting piece of information: VBoxSVC.exe executes and starts fine from the command prompt. VirtualBox.exe is the one throwing the COM error.
