tallygeek... my feeling is it can not access your virtualbox.xml file.. so there is probably a problem with your hardlinks.. I havent got this to work yet either.. but looking at the posts you may also need to add

PathToVBoxVRDP=C:\Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe to your settings section...

Id start by doing a search on your machine for virtualbox.xml.. make sure there isn't a blank one somewhere..IE there is only one.. or hard links for it

I resolved the "Could not find a registered machine named 'Ubuntu' " issue by coping the file to the "default user" folder.
Don't know why

My Host is Vista 64bit, i use Sun xVM VirtualBox ver 2.1.0

I installed VBoxVmService (rel20081009) using the instruction file. The Service starts but i cannot connect tho the machine - i guess it did not start!

INI:

Code: Select all

[Settings]
ServiceName=VBoxVmService
PathToVBoxSDL=C:\Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxSDL.exe
PathToVBoxHeadless=C:\Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe

CommandLineDown=C:\VM\VirtualBox\vms\shutdown.exe 0
WorkingDir=C:\VM\VirtualBox\vms
StartupMethod=vrdp
ShutdownMethod=savestate
VrdpPort=33892
The Service runs under the vboxUser which has admin rights.

VERR_SHARING_VIOLATION

Post by jbuturff »

When I have a service running, I cannot open the VirtualBox console application. I get a VERR_SHARING_VIOLATION on my VirtualBox.XML settings file. I tried setting my VBOX_USER_HOME to a central location. I've checked file permissions, everything seems OK.

I am running two virtual machines, and both work OK. I just cannot start the console now unless I shutdown the virtual machines, set the services to Manual start mode, and reboot.

When sharing the same config with several users, you can't run a VM with two different users, as one of them already has the config in memory, thus the file is locked.

Thanks for your reply.

So do I have to have a separate user for each VM? I've tried doing everything as one user (ADMINISTRATOR). That gave the same issue. In fact, until my last attempt, I only have user on the box itself, the ADMINISTRATOR account. It's a brand new box, and I'm only trying to use it to serve up VMs.

Basically, I want to have a total of 4 VMs, with each VM being a separate service that I can start/stop. And ideally, one user would be able to open the console application and administer the VMs as necessary. Is this possible?

Thanks for your help.

It can be done, but the service need to run as the user who needs to administer the VMs.

Thanks for all your help so far.

I have set my services to all run as the local Administrator account.

In each VBoxVMService.ini file, I have the following set:

RunAtDomain=<localhost>
RunAsUser=Administrator
UserPassword=********

So, logged in as Administrator, I start one service. I open Task Manager and see that Administrator owns the processes, and my VM starts up correctly.

However, if Administrator tries to open the Console app, I still get the VERR_SHARING_VIOLATION.

Who else could/would have it open?

You can check that with Process Explorer. It's on the MS download page. Google for it and you will get a link for download.

According to Process Explorer, VBoxSVC.EXE is the only process that has VirtualBox.xml open. That process is being run by Administrator.

Is it because the service is running in a different (non) "desktop"?

Thanks again for all your help.

That's very likely. You want all VMs to run headless? Perhaps there is a different solution possible to run them upon logon, without leaving a command prompt window running.

Yes, I'd like them all to run headless if possible. I would really even prefer not to have to logon to run them. I can simply start/stop them via the Services. And using my box, I can connect my Services to another computer, so that all works. My only pain at this point is having to stop all my VMs to make a change in the configuration to any one of them...

If anyone has any advice, I'd love to get this resolved. I really don't want to switch to Hyper-V.

I've been trying to get VBoxVMService working in Vista x64. I have the following config:

Code: Select all

[Settings]
ServiceName=VBoxVmService
PathToVBoxSDL=C:\program files\sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxSDL.exe
PathToVBoxHeadless=C:\program files\sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe
PathToVBoxVRDP=C:\program files\sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxHeadless.exe
PathToVBoxManage=C:\program files\sun\xVM VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe
RunAtDomain=KEVIN-LAPTOP
RunAsUser=vbox
UserPassword=vboxpass

[Vm0]
VmName=Gentoo
CommandLineUp=c:\vbox\vms\startup.exe 0 BRUTEFORCE
CommandLineDown=c:\vbox\vms\shutdown.exe 0
WorkingDir=C:\vbox\vms
StartupMethod=vrdp
ShutdownMethod=savestate
VrdpPort=3389
And I get the following in my log when I try to run:

Code: Select all

Who is your service configured to run as, LocalSystem or a specific user?

With the service and VM shut down, have you cleaned out your LOCK, RUN and TMP folders?

Do any of the processes show up, and then go away? VBoxSVC.EXE? VBoxHeadless.exe?
