I have a 64bit system however virtualbox doesn't recognize this. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and virtualization is enabled in the bios. I am trying to install Server 2008 r2 in Virtualbox and it errors out saying the CPU is not 64-bit. Is there another setting or something in Virtualbox that needs to be set for this to work? Just the bios. Oh and you need to make sure you selected the 64 bit version of the host. Look in the system and make sure that VT-x/AMD-v is enabled.

Where do i find this setting vt-x/amd-v? It doesn't appear in Virtualbox. The drop down menu which is supposed to have the 64-bit versions does not display them. thank for your time.

Sounds like VirtualBox has installed the 32 bit version. You say that hardware virtualization is turned on. Are you absolutely sure that it is? What about trusted execution (or what ever your bios calls it? It should be disabled as well in the bios.

I am positive virtualization is turned on. I updated the bios and disabled the only thing close to trusted execution. It still does not want to load the 64bit system nor does it show up in the drop down box. Thanks for your time.

So, you don't get the 64 bit options for the OS selection. Do you have the Acceleration tab available (not greyed out) in the VM settings?
What CPU do you have exactly?
Did you find an option in your BIOS called Hardware Acceleration or Hardware Virtualisation?

It it quite possible that your hardware just doesn't support hardware assisted virtualisation. If that's the case, then you're out of luck and will not be able to use the features of VB that rely on it.

I have the intel Pentium P6200 CPU. The acceleration tab is greyed out.
