Starting my VBox activates my webcam

I have Win7 64-bit and am using VBox 4.1.2. My guest OS is Ubuntu.

When I start my Ubuntu VBox the light on my webcam comes on. Vbox says the webcam is not connected to my ubuntu OS (and I don't want it to) but also my Win7 box can't use the webcam anymore because it things something is using it.

Anyone encounter this problem and know how to fix it? I do actually use my webcam to video chat with people about a website we are working on an I want my Ubuntu session open at the same time to be able to log into the webserver and make edits and do linux stuff.

thanks for any help!

Have you defined a filter for the webcam in the guest settings?

I tried to define a fliter but that just makes VBox completely crash when the Ubuntu OS starts

My point was not to have one as this would start the webcam each time you started the guest. Try disabling the USB in the guest settings then and see if that works.

I tried that also, but I get a message saying I need it for the mouse and keyboard so it turns USB back on.....

I'm experiencing the same problem using VirtualBox 4.1.18. I have a Microsoft LifeCam camera, both host and guest are running Win7 x64. I cannot seem to find any settings in VirtualBox that disables the camera. even if there is nothing to worry about, it still feels like I am being spied on! anyone have any answers? Oracle engineers? This issue goes back at least as far back as Jan 2011. someone please help!
