Windows 7 backup image in Virtual Box

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed already but I searched the forum and could not find a discussion on it.

I have a backup image of my W7 machine and wanted to test it in VBox. I have tried selecting the .VHD file from my backup but was unsuccessful.
Is this possible? If so How?
Thanks.

No, it is not possible. Microsoft uses the .vhd file type for backup but the image can only be used by the backup software. It is not a bootable image of the installed OS.

Is there any way of testing my Windows backup on a VM?

Install Windows and restore the backup through the use of the image?

I tried that but it asks where to restore it from. The file size is 96gb so I can't put it on a flash drive. I tried pulling from a network drive but can't get it to work.
