Sadly this did not work for me. Followed the directions to the letter and nada.alexsecret wrote:Open a terminal window, go to your home folder (don't forget that) and type:
sudo gedit .gtkrc-2.0 (DO NOT forget the dot in the beginning of the filename)
Type your password and when gedit opens copy/paste the following two entries in that new file.
include "/usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"
gtk-icon-theme-name = "ubuntu-mono-dark"
The second line will fix the icons in Nautilus.
Save the file, close gedit and restart your VM and...

Just wondering, is this a VirtualBox problem or Ubuntu problem?
I am glad it worked for you too!
It seems it's a Ubuntu 11.04 bug because it happens to many standalone installations and on different graphics cards. What bothers me is that it was happening since the beta versions and it seems it's not fixed on the final unfortunately!
Re: Graphic display old theme problem in Ubuntu 11.04
I am having this problem also.
The weird part is that i have 2 separate Ubuntu VM's (I ran the installer independently for each VM).
On one VM the theme appears just fine. On the other VM the theme is the old incorrect theme.
However, putting those two lines inside of my .gtkrc-2.0 file did fix the problem.

Same here.abcuser wrote:The problem has reappeared in my case...
The new fix seems to work better. But unfortunately, Ubuntu's file manager (Nautilus) still stays stuck on the old theme.

It works fine in my case. Have you tried increasing "sleep 5" to "sleep 20" as suggested in article?algida79 wrote:(Nautilus) still stays stuck on the old theme.
Re: Graphic display old theme problem in Ubuntu 11.04
Yes, the sleep value was set to 20 from the "get-go"...

Re: Graphic display old theme problem in Ubuntu 11.04
I have found out that running programs with 'normal' user solution above solves the problem, but using root user, the problem persists.
From terminal:
gedit
nautilus
synaptic
works fine, but using:
gksudo gedit
gksudo nautilus
gksudo synaptic
it gets back to old-style theme.
Has someone also solve this problem for root user?
