Okay, so I downloaded VirtualBox 3.2.12 and installed it on XP Pro, SP3. After the install, when it went to reboot, it VERY briefly flashed up an error stating something about that it was unable to install. When the computer came back up, Virtualbox appeared to be fine. I tried to create a VM but when I try to start the VM I get this error: "VirtualBox - Runtime Error" "Cannot access the kernel driver!" followed by "Failed to open a session for the virtual machine" "The Virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup". The details state a "REsult code" of "E_FAIL (0x80004005)"

I tried "repairing" virtualbox, but that made no difference. Ideas?

OKay, so I did another repair and, even though it's fast, I was able to catch the error code before the restart. It very briefly pops up saying "Installation failed: error code 1641".... what is that?

I've now uninstalled and reinstalled, no love.

I see the same error described here http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/7050, but no solution.

No ideas?

Im having the same issue. Installation appeared okay until i clicked the Finish button then an error quickly popped up as my system rebooted. Now im stuck staring at my broken VirtualBox and wondering why i thought upgrading was a good idea.

Any solutions?

i think i have a work-around to fix the issue, at least it worked for me.

1) restart WinXP and do not start anything else up
2) restart the VirtualBox installer
3) select 'Repair'
4) After the repair is done, exit the installer ( I didnt see the Reboot option, and i would NOT have chosen it if it did show up ).
5) manually reboot your system ( Start -> Shut Down -> Reboot )
6) a small prayer while your PC reboots (not much else you can be doing during that time anyway)
7) Check VirtualBox settings on the VM you are going to try. I had to redo the Network settings on mine because they were screwed up.
If all looks well, then start your VM.

Well, I tried bclark's method. Maybe I didn't pray hard enough during that one step, but it didn't work

So much for going for new "upgrades". I've got several Linux VM's, none of them start now.

"The VM session was closed before any attempt to power it on"

OK, I'm back. It's working now. Repair didn't work, so I tried 'remove'. After it completed 'removal', the Virtual Box main window showed up. Not good. It even showed the same version I had tried to 'upgrade' to, and then 'remove'. So I closed it and started the install executable again, so see if a second 'remove' would work, but I never got that option - it went straight to install.

For some reason, this time it worked.
