Need help with USB on Windows hosts

Hi all,

For the months I've been trying VB, I've not been able to use USB on any Windows hosts be it XP, Vista or Windows 7. Neither can I find much discussion about the problem. I've just tried the keyword search 'USB' on this forum which returns "No suitable matches were found," which is obviously in error considering the term appears frequently in the subject lines.

Anyway, story goes, I plug in a device, any device. It detects on the host and I wait for it to settle in. I then select the device for the guest with a few typical initial results ranging from the host detecting the VirtualBox USB hardware and prompting for drivers which are then loaded somewhat automatially. No device appears. The device is unticked in the VB device list. If a second attempt is made it throws a busy error:
USB device '<device>' with UUID {130f...7ed} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.
and details such as:
Result Code:
E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component:
HostUSBDevice
Interface:
IHostUSBDevice {173b4b44-d268-4334-a00d-b6521c9a740a}
Callee:
IConsole {6375231a-c17c-464b-92cb-ae9e128d71c3}
This happens on every computer I've loaded VB onto and I can't fathom either what I'm doing wrong or why it's not being addressed. I tried VB versions 3.1.4, 3.1.6, and now 3.2.6 with no luck or clue. :cry:

Cheers

Please list all USB devices that are in use on the Host.
Also list the devices that you are trying to use. Make and model on all USB devices please.

I am having the same problem Windows 7 32bit host Windows XP guest.
I've tried using a both a blank USB filter and whatever the other one is that automatically captures the details of all USB devices plugged in. My flashdrive is recognized when plugged in and it appears in Devices but I can't access it! Doesn't show up in My Computer or in Explorer. ????

This is what my 'Devices' > 'USB Devices' look like:
Logitech USB Receiver [0500] which my wireless mouse receiver and which works fine.
Unknown Device 04F2:B128 [4016] ???
PNY Technologies USB 2.0 FD [0512] which is my 512mb Thumb Drive which I can't open.

Any help appreciated!

I checked out the free Windows Virtual PC 2007 and the latest version (6.1) claims to support USB.
Here's a quote from the download site: - USB support: Users can access USB devices attached to the host, directly from virtual machines. These devices include Printers and Scanners, Flash Memory/Sticks and External Hard Drives, Digital Cameras, and more.

Thanks Perry

Here's a few devices I've tried to connect. The Promethean ACTIVboard (interactive whiteboard) is the most problematic and unfortunatly the show stopper in for the project...

These have been tested since your reply on my MacBook Pro running Windows XP Pro host and Windows XP Pro as guest (setup for our Standard Operating Environment). As mentioned I've had the same problems on other hardware/Win OS's. I've attached some crash data reported by the WinXP host

USB devices...

@ragman,
Are there other devices USB attached to the host? Such as Printers, Keyboards, IPod, Card readers, ETC. that you don't use or try to use on the guest but are active on the host? Please list make and model.

Hi,

I see questions on USB issues, but not what I am seeing. I as new as wet paint so I will try to explain.

I have the full version of the newest virtualbox 3.6.2 r63112 and running windows 7 pro as a guest. I have corrected all issues except the USB issue. The guest window device drop down menu shows me my 2 USB devices are active (they are checked and they are not grayed out) but when i enter Windows 7 they do not show up as a device under the Computer listed devices. Are supposed to be mapped manually or are they suppose to show automatically?

Thanks for any assistance.

Richard

@rjhanson
There is no USB support in the OSE version (as stated in your profile) of VirtualBox.
Also this is the Windows host section which from your profile is not your host.
Continue by creating a new topic in the Linux host section.

Hi Perry,

These are the devices offered by the VB interface of the MacBook Pro host that I've been using for development. I don't have current access to the other hardware platforms at this time (consisting of DELL and Toshiba laptops) that I've been trialing the guest appliance which experience the same nature of crashing.

Device: Micron Built-in iSight
Vendor ID: 05AV
Prod ID: 8503

Device: Western Digital External HDD (from which the guest is currently being run but was having the same problems when running from the local HDD. Not attempting to connect the running guest to this device)

Same situation. I can connect a Linksys USB wireless NIC to the XP host and it works fine, but when attempting to connect it to the virtual machine I get:

Code: Select all

Failed to attach the USB Device Unknown Device to the virtual machine Windows 7 Wireless.

USB device 'Linksys Linksys WUSB600N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter with Dual-Band ver. 2' with UUID {4744b2f2-9f7e-4202-ac0c-63c7145fff53} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.

Details:

Result Code:
E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component:
HostUSBDevice
Interface:
IHostUSBDevice {173b4b44-d268-4334-a00d-b6521c9a740a}
Callee:
IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
I find it odd that the message says "Unknown Device" when I have a filter defined, but I get the same error whether the filter exists or not. The only other USB device is the mouse. Any ideas?

@brainclots,

As you can see, this issue was never resolved in the past year. My project was to develop a VM appliance running our Standard Operating Environment to rollout to privately own laptop in an education environment. The USB instability kill it.

That is less than desirable news. Is there no developer looking at this issue? It is pretty huge obviously!

Yes they are working on it. You may want to follow this post http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 1&start=30
Go back a few pages too.

I didn't want to create new thread so I want to add sth to this thread cause I know that E_INVALIDARG is still unsolved (or maybe I'm wrong).
I'm using 4.0.12 latest and every basic addons which are present for download and for long time I could use pendrive only by shared folder.
Any tips on webpages make anything to resolve issue. And yesterday I found sth very interesting. Till now I was using my vdi bootdisk with XP (yes, XP in XP)
on USB - means that vdi file is on external usb drive.
When I put vdi on internal IDE drive and changed paths in configuration system started normally, and without any problems (no more E_INVALIDARG error)
found additional pendrive, installed native driver and everything. So could that be an issue or it is normal behaviour of VBOX?

Regards.
