Windows Server 2003 trial as domain controller

Post by Aldik »

Hi,

I have installed Windows Server 2003 trial, created my domain and configured this server as
domain controller - active directory. I have installed Windows XP Prof and I wanted add this
system to the main domain. Can I made this? Both system ran together, I could connect to the
internet from xp and server, but if I wanted add XP to the domain, Xp showed message, that
domain controller hasn't found . Please, can anybody help me, how I can create my virtual private
domain, how I set VirtualBox? Host computer is a XP prof. Thanks

Do you have 2 virtual machines ? (1 for 2003 and 1 for XP)
How do you configure your network cards ? (bridged, NAT, ...)

If you don't need the Internet for your lab, you can try to connect your two virtual machines, if you use two virtual machines, using an internal network. Make sure your two machines use static ip addresses in the same network and they will be able to speak to each other.

Yes, I have 2 virtual machines (2003 and Xp). Network cards are configured as NAT to the host system. I don't need conect to the internet from virtual machines. It meas, that I set W 2003 network cartd as
192.168.1.1 mask 255.255.255.0 and set Xp card 192.168.1.2 and mask 255.255.255.0? Need I set gateway in Xp as 192.168.1.1 (w2003)? Or I must create (add) a new host interface in setting 2003?
Thanks

Edit : see my latest post below, it works well. Not a problem with virtualbox. Only misconfiguration ...

I have the same problem. I installed Active directory on my Windows 2003.

Windows 2003 : attached to the internal network, ip 10.0.0.3 netmask 255.0.0.0
Windows XP : attached to the internal network, ip 10.0.0.2 netmask 255.0.0.0.

The two machines ping each other.
When XP tries to join the domain, there is an error message (see screenshot below) :

PS : Labs on real machines work with domain names ending in .lan.

Edit : see my latest post below, it works well. Not a problem with virtualbox. Only misconfiguration ...

I think the safe way is to setup bridged network for both virtual machines.

Hi,
Actually, I have just realized, only now, that an important setting had been forgotten.
You do not need to configure a gateway. However, it is important to configure you primary DNS server as the IP of your domain controller. I have just tried it again only adding the ip for the primary dns and it works perfectly well.
It is was only a misconfiguration from me.

So :
- the internal network works well
- it confirms domain names ending in .lan work ;-)
- not a problem with virtualbox, virtualbox works very well

Hope it helps.

Hi, thank you for help me. I try describe your settings, if I understand well.

Win 2003 - static ip adress - 10.0.0.3
mask 255.0.0.0

Xp - static adress - 10.0.0.2
mask 255.0.0.0
DNS - (ip adress Win 2003) 10.0.0.3

Windows 2003 runs as a DNS server.

Both operating systems have settings network as

Enable network adapter -
not attached
NAT
Host interface
Internal network ?

Thanks

My windows 2003 :
10.0.0.2 netmask 255.0.0.0.0
Virtualbox settings : network : attached to Internal Network
these two squares are ticked : "enable network adapter" and "cable connected"

My XP
10.0.0.3 netmask 255.0.0.0.0 (and primary dns : 10.0.0.2)
Virtualbox settings : network : attached to Internal Network
these two squares are ticked : "enable network adapter" and "cable connected"

I also create one host interface. The same host interface appears in the network settings of the two virtual machines. But, I am not sure if the host interface is important or not, probably only for communication between the host and the guest.

Thanks you very much, but I have problem with setting W2003 as DNS and domain controller. Ping rans from both systems to each other, I configured DNS and domain and added virtual XP to the Active directory and computers- computers (to the I pasted XP name), but if I was trying add my XP (ping was active and valid) to the domain, I saw error message, that XP cannot connect to the domain controller
MyDomain, code error 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT, and server DNS don't replay.
Thanks you for your help me
