Guest additions doesn't work on Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit

Post by UnclePetros »

Hi,
besides all I've this configuration:
Host - Windows XP
Guest - Ubuntu 10.04

Then, I've a problem with guest additions installation on guest operating system, Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit.

I've installed guest Ubuntu 10.04 under VirtualBox 3.1.8 successfully.
Then I've started Ubuntu 10.04 and I've installed Guest Additions 3.1.8 successfully.
But when I restart Ubuntu, after the login nothing is showed, system seems to be locked on the desktop background.
I can't do nothing, I have to shutdown virtual machine.

I've noticed when I shutdown virtual machine, I'm able to see the working desktop for a while, before closing.

I've tried to look for a solution, without any success.

Thank you in advance.

Regards

Mounting the guest additions was not straightforward for my install. Did the following via terminal in the Ubuntu guest after mounting the Guest Addtions iso via the virtualbox host:

$ sudo mount /dev/sr0 -t iso9660 -r /cdrom
$ cd /cdrom
$ sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run

Do not know why this did not mount automatically, but the above allowed me to successfully install guest additions.

Make sure that the GA are installed properly. See my Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config for more information. Ubuntu 10.04 no longer needs the xorg.conf file. I have my 10.04 VM running just fine. Do you see anything at all, like a white or black window and a mouse cursor? If so, check your Host 3D options and if you have in fact enabled 3D for the VM. Default Gnome tends to activate desktop effects when it detects a capable driver and can very well result in a white or black screen right after log on.

Hi all.

I have (nearly) the same problem as UnclePetros. I had Kubuntu 10.04 x64 running well under VB 3.1.6 with Win7 x64 host. No problems at all.

Then I upgraded the guest additions in Kubuntu. That's where the problem started. The install seemed to go ok and I restarted the Kubuntu, but it would not shutdown. So I killed it and restarted Kubuntu and got the same screen as UnclePetros described after the login screen is shown.

I have since reinstalled Kubuntu under VB 3.1.8 and I get the same story once the guest additions are installed.

Thinking about going back to VB 3.1.6.

update: I switched back to VB 3.1.6 and my problem has gone away. Interesting...

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Cheers

SOLUTION: I just found a different solution to this problem as well. I am running 3.2.0 and found that if I unchecked the 3D acceleration box in the guest settings, Gnome loaded fine. Guest Additions and 3D aren't playing nice I guess?

Yes, this finally works fine!
But what does this mean?

Should I renounce to 3D acceleration?

It seems to be a bug. If yes, I would report it.

Anyhow thank you.
I'm a bit less frustrated now! :)

The fact that with 3D enabled you don't get a proper desktop only means that your Host is not capable of providing true OpenGL acceleration. If that fails, so will the 3D effects that gets enabled automatically when OpenGL extensions becomes available to the Guest OS.

i was having issues even getting the guest additions to work for seamless mode. in the pdf manual there are pretty good instructions. i saw what i needed to know in a differrent thread but cant find it not to post to it. i run windows 7 untimate as host and ubuntu 10.10 as guest. in the ubuntu terminal i typed "sudu apt-get install dkms" and then mounted th guest aditions .iso like a normal disc. after a few minutes i was able to install the guest additions and seamless mode runs perfectly now. download the users manual and a good pdf viewer and its covered in chapter 4.2.2. the only complaint i have is because im running linux as guest i can't do the really cool eye candy tht sold me on linux but maybe this will be fixed in an update. over all a very good solution that has allowed me to do a lot more than i was before

Jimmy, FYI, I have no problems at all running Compiz (the flasy eye-candy effects) on my Linux VMs. Though I do have Xfce4 as desktop manager with Compiz-Fusion as Window Manager, instead of Gnome and it's build-in Compiz. That might make a difference. You also need to have a good video card, I.e. an XFX nVidia 7800 GTX (I know, it's 4 years old). If you run on an onboard video card, it might not give you the features that are needed. Bad drivers can also cause strange effects.

the lack of eye candy isnt really that big a deal for me. it really is just the 3D desktop switcher that i miss. i never really used the visual effects for more than anything but entertainment and if i even bother using a second workspace its just because i occasionally feel like being impressive for my less technical friends. i really dont have a very good undertanding of all the various compbiz and other stuff, never really learned it. i do have a pretty good knowledge base but mostly focused on general operations and maintanance with a few really impressive tricks thrown in. to be honest most of my friends are so clueless about technology that i seem like an absolute god when it comes to computers but i would be laughed out of any real geek gathering. i also run seamless mode and from what i gather thats the big reason i cant get the specific eye candy i want. i will eventually get around to learning about what you put in ur post and if you have any good starting places for me to look for info please feel free to post them. as for hardware, im running a compaq 6910p with a core2dou proc so i dont think that hardware is really an issue when it comes to running the y candy. its probably just user-lazy error.
