Version 2.0 out: same network...

Post by nicorac »

Sorry to see that the new VBox 2.0 has the same network subsystem, nothing changed :?.

Same dialogs, same (missing) seamless bridging features, same Windows-host limits.

Hope that someone is in charge for this...

Hi!

I have a weird problem with Virtualbox 2.0.0 on Windows XP (SP3).
I've created two virtual machines (Debian Etch and Fedora 9).

Every machine is attached to an unique host interface with unique MAC address: 08:XX:XX:XX:XX:B7 and 08:XX:XX:XX:XX:C3.

The bridge:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
ID AdapterFriendlyName ForceCompatibilityMode
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1 VirtualBox Host Interface 2 enabled
2 VirtualBox Host Interface 1 enabled
3 Local Area Connection enabled
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Debian uses #1 and Fedora #2. "ifconfig" on the virtual machines and "arp -a" on the host machine display the correct mac address. My DHCP server receives/displays different mac address (00:xx:xx:xx:xx:84), same for each virtual machine and assigns the same ip address. So when I run several virtual machines at the same time only one has a working network connection. :-(

Hmm, with Virtualbox 1.6.x the DHCP server shows correct mac address.
Is this a bug in 2.0.0?

Thanks.

I installed another virtual machine. Guest OS = Vista

On this virtual machine the problem does not occur. DHCP Server displays the correct mac address and assigns a proper IP address.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
ID AdapterFriendlyName ForceCompatibilityMode
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1 VirtualBox Host Interface 3 enabled
2 VirtualBox Host Interface 2 enabled
3 VirtualBox Host Interface 1 enabled
4 Local Area Connection enabled
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Vista uses VirtualBox Host Interface 3.

The first post is just about a link which 'should' describe how to bridge a network on Windows. In the next major release, HIF will change a bit, having a new option available to select an interface directly.

Even so, if you can't get it working how it should according to the manual, please open a new topic. Or continue here if you like ;).

2.1.0 networking is great!

Post by nicorac »

VB 2.1.0 networking is great, at least at first sight :D

- no configuration required
- virtual machines are visible externally
- ports are accessible externally (tried 22,23,80,110,143)

I've not done performance tests, but this is a good start.
Well done guys :D

I would have preferred an option to use the classic method as well as the new one...

Need to come up with a whole new networking scheme for my needs now

Which is "classic"? Using separate virtual network adapter? You can still use it, just create a standard MS Loopback adapter and bridge your VM to it.
