Cannot add any guest additions

Post by ranger_cole »

I am using VB 3.1.2 on Win xp Pro sp3. I am trying to add guest additions for various linux distros. I get the following error:

Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {6375231a-c17c-464b-92cb-ae9e128d71c3}
Callee:
IMachine {99404f50-dd10-40d3-889b-dd2f79f1e95e}

Something about VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED.

I also get this same error on my Win 7 system when I try to install guest additions.

Once the guest has started, click on devices tab then CD/DVD and then click on unmount the CD/DVD. Then click on install guest additions.
On Linux guest, make sure that the CD/DVD has been ejected from the OS, then do the unmount, install guest additions.

I had to do a force unmount. I then clicked install guest addition and nothing happens.

Ok lets try this.
Shut down the guest. Then in the storage area of the guest in the main VBox program, go to the CD and click it once. Then go to the right where it says what is mounted and use the drill down to select the guest additions. Start the guest and click on install guest additions.

Start the guest. Then see that it is not in full screen and see the screen shot below. Do you have something like this?

Yes I have that screen. When I go to guest and change the media to guestadditions.iso and try to run the linux I changed it fails to boot and says not bootable media.

Usually this means that the guest still has the CD/DVD mounted. If you look on the desktop and see the CD/DVD you need to right click on it and tell it to eject. Then go to the devices tab and tell it to unmount the CD/DVD. After that you should be able to click on the devices tab and then click on install guest additions and it will mount it on the desktop.

If this fails then you need to shut down the guest and then go to the storage area of the guest settings in the VBox program and mount the guest additions from there.
Then start the guest and click on the devices tab and then install guest additions. Once it on the desktop you can install them.
Once they are mounted then follow this guide Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config

Then you are changing the wrong area. You do not want to change the HD you want to change the CD/DVD. See screen shot below.

I tried to upload a screenshot but every file type I try is too big 168Kb?
Also I am using a .vdi of lin-x 1.1 and its work in fullscreen and seamless mode and it does not have guestadditions installed as cd/dvd.

It seems like you are trying to boot from the guest additions CD? This CD image is not bootable, the installation program needs to be run from inside a already installed and running guest.
