[Solved] Installation error

Post by ishan_mehta »

Hello,
I have Windows Vista SP1 (6.0.6001) as my host OS. I have downloaded the latest version of virtual box installer (VirtualBox-3.0.4-50677-Win.exe).

While installation, it gives an error message: "The cabinet file common.cab required for this installation is corrupt....". Earlier I tried to download and install the version 3.0.2 (VirtualBox-3.0.2-49928-Win.exe). That used to give me a similar error in product.cab file.

Can anyone please tell me how to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ishan.

Have you tried downloading it again? or download it directly to some different storagemedia?

Check the file hash with the one from the download directory. This is the MD5SUM of the 3.0.4 installer:
de7028d746badf41d14b5021ee9a7669 VirtualBox-3.0.4-50677-Win.exe
Use this tool: http://www.etree.org/cgi-bin/counter.cg ... md5sum.exe to verify the hash.

Code: Select all

<path>\md5sum.exe <path to VB installer>

Right click on the file , in the "Compatibility" page, set "Compatible with Windows2000"
Then the annoying dialogue box stop appearing.
And you can successfully installed v3.0.4

If the installer is complaining about a file being corrupt then you don't want to ignore the message!

VB isn't going to install when it detects Windows 2000, so that option is out of the question too. Programs like VB that create kernel hooks to access the hardware more directly should never, ever be installed using compat mode.

Thank you very much. It is my fault, I did not check the MD5SUM. The culprit must be "Free Download Manager" which I was using to download the EXE faster using multiple threads. The MD5 checksum of my EXE was wrong. I now used FireFox's own download manager to download the EXE in a single thread in one shot and the file downloaded has the correct MD5 checksum. Though, I have been using Free Download Manager for months now, it has never corrupted a download befoe. In this case, it corrupted both 3.0.2 and 3.0.4 versions. Could it be due to the fact that the VB EXE download is not done directly, but it seems to be checking session, etc. ? Does the download server support "bytes" or other "byte range" HTTP headers so that download accelerators can be used?

Once again, thank you for your help and sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,
Ishan.

Confirmed. Download managers mess up sometimes. I also downloaded via Firefox directly and MD5s matched and VBox4.0.2-Win installed with no issues.
