Hi,
I'm trying to get internet into VBox Guest machine thru:
HUAWIE Mobile USB 3G modem
Host: XP SP3
Guest OSs: XP SP3, Win 2k3
vbox 2.2.4 r47978
I've managed to get it into VBox thru USB share - and it was recognised as a USB flash drive so I installed drivers, program for using the mobile and all other stuff as normal. The problem is that when I try to connect to the net I'm getting one of the following things:
-can't recognise the device
-recognise it as HUAWIE in guest but can't open USB flash drive or connect to the net thru connection client
-VBox Unknown device 12d1:1003. E_InvalidARG (0x80070057)
After that host OS doesn't recognise HUAWIE either and need to restart or plug/unplag USB to get it again in the system.
Please help if you have any idea what I can change to make it work.
Thanks.

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
I've had this running once for a test, you need an empty usb filter since it are 2 devices in one.

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
Hi,
I too have been trying to get the 3G mobile broadband to work with a windows xp guest. i have it installed but it cannot connect and I guess this must be something to do with what you are saying about it being 2 devices. Could you give more information about the empty usb filter that you suggested?

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
Nothing specific other then an empty filter so it can grab anything coming over the usb lines. And a lot of patience, some dialog boxes can be hidden behind a GUI of VM GUI when VBox drivers get installed.

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
I have made almost made it...
This was done with a Huawei modem provided by 3 in Sweden.
These are the steps I followed and the result:
This was done with a Huawei modem provided by 3 in Sweden.
These are the steps I followed and the result:
- * Add the Huawei modem in the VirtualBox USB filter.
* Start XP guest.
* Windows finds the new modem but lacks the drivers. I cancel that step since the drivers are stored within the modem.
* Windows find the new mass storage device.
* Two new drives appears in Explorer. E: contains the drivers. F: is something else - I guess that it's actually the modem.
* Installed the drivers from e:.
* Restarted
* Windows still find two mass storage devices. However, when I check in the Windows Device Manager I can find the Huawei modem device.
* Start modem connection software. Won't find any modem...
* Safely remove the drives using the icon in the system tray. When I removed f: my modem software suddenly finds the modem.
* Tried to connect....

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
I'm doing it the simplest way.
Just connect your Host PC to the internet via the USB Modem.
The Guest PC will automatically be able to access internet because it is networked to the Host PC by the VBox VPN.

Re: 3G USB modem in VBox
It is not the solution, it is a workaround
I am having the same problems.
I have managed even to connect modem to the inet (I am having huawei) the provider has put the Linux installation there and it works under Linux, but has some problem under VB
I see that network manager got connected to the web, it shows off the valid ip and gateway, yet when I am trying to use firefox it says that server is not found. I can not ping the server also. This is under Mandriva
Under Ubuntu it tries to connect yet can not.
What I did:
1. I have installed modem under host (WinXP)
2. Installed under guest (Linux, either Mandriva or Ubuntu)
3. Used a special soft (supplied by provider) to connect to inet
any help are welcome
PS
I have not got a clue with filters, reading the forum
what is this and how to use it.
PPS
It is recommended to establish the connection to inet through the host and then use this connection at VB.
It is not clear. If I am installing the connection at the host my lan connection goes away. I need to have both network connected to the inet, lan and dialup. Lan - for win applications dialup for VB. Who knows how to do that?
Thanks in advance
