Try un-installing your present VBox and then reboot. Then install the new version. Be sure that you install to the same directory that the original one was in.2008Lenovo wrote:Why do I double-click Setup VirtualBox-2.2.0, it express "Could not creat temporary directory", this means it can not be installed! I am using Windows XP, the same problem appears. And I tried to uninstall the previous version (2.1.4) first, but the problem still existed. I have only 100MB space total in C: , wonder if this is the cause.

Sounds to me like you need to clear off some drive space. Should improve the performance a lot as well.zzb wrote:I am using Windows XP, the same problem appears. Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
Same here - "Could not create temporary directory".
Seems to be a localization issue (at least for me): my XP user name is in Hebrew. Once I switch to, say, "Administrator", I no longer see this message.
It still fails re-installation, but that's another (?) issue.

I encounter the same phenomenon, too. However, my HDD still has the free space.(20GB)
OS of HOST is XP(sp3).

Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
I solved this problem.
you can create a account with english, like "administrator" or "theuser".Don't use chinese.
then add the account in the computer's local administrator group.
after that, login as the account and install it.
it's problem form no english account......

Or in Vista you can right click on the install exe and tell it to run as administrator.
Sorry I just had time to read the replies.

Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
@all who have problems using non-English user names regarding the temporary directory: Which Windows version and language for Windows do you use? What language / user names do I have to enter to reproduce this problem? Maybe you could paste me your temp path here? (It's in a hidden directory in "C:\Documents and Settings\<Your username>\Local Settings\Temp" usually). Thanks!

Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
Hello, I am having the same problem. I have been waiting for ever for this to be fixed. I was hoping that 3.0 would fix this but that is not the case.
I am using a Japanese version of Windows 7 RC 32-bit.
When i try to install virtualbox, the following message is displayed:
Could not create temporary directory! Path :C?Users??????AppDate?Local?Temp??VirtualBox
ERROR: A string claiming to be UTF-8 is incorrectly encoded.
This has not worked for me ever even on a Japanese windows XP system. I can install fine on a Japanese Ubuntu system though.
Im guessing this is the same for Korean, Chinese or any other non Roman based language.

Try adding
TEMP=c:\temp
as a global envirinment variable and create that directory.

Some say: "You learn as long as you live".
My way: "You live as long as you learn".

Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
From what I see the statement is trying to produce the followingPath :C?Users??????AppDate?Local?Temp??VirtualBox
C\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\\VirtualBox
Notice that there appears to be no : after the C and the double \\ after Temp
I have see this reported here before but for the life of me I have no clue what the outcome was.
EDIT:
Here is one suggestion http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16487 says to run the install by selecting run as administer.
And a ticket opened 3 months ago http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3873

Re: Error"Could not creat temporary directory" on Windows Host!
Thanks for the reply.
Sorry, I input the directory incorrectly it should be
C:?Users??????AppDate?Local?Temp??VirtualBox
with the colon after the C
It seems like a valid directory to me.
How do I change the temp folder in Windows 7?
It is a bit disappointing that Sun or the Virtualbox team is just ignoring people in Asian countries. This has not worked for a long time, and there has been no fix for it. Why is there a Japanese page at Sun Japan for Virtualbox but it does not work on Japanese systems? Has anyone even tested this on a Japanese system?
I guess i can't complain about a free product, but this should be something that can easily fixed.
