v7.0.8 is really bad (high CPU) VS v6.1.40 when tons of VMs are running

Post by VirtualboxFan »

(mod edit: continuation of the problem discussion here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=107967&p=531569#p531569)

Seems the high CPU issues with the v7.x.x series has not been address. The problem is not very apparent if you're just running a few vm's. However, once you start adding more, the problems becomes night and day noticeable.

The performance on the latest v7.0.8 is really bad compared to v6.1.40. In this test I ran the same number vm's.
The results:

v7.0.8 sky rocketed to 63% CPU. It's almost unusable.

v6.1.40 ran at a cool 22% CPU

The issue was also submitted here from a previous test as well: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/21455

Here on the forum we're not the developers, so we cannot fix this. If the problem isn't discussed by the devs on the ticket, or the changelog for new Virtualbox versions doesn't discuss it, it's likely to not have been fixed yet.

Also, please see my remarks on your ticket on your older post on this topic.

Got it. Thanks. :D

I'll have to wait til I have a day to setup the test again and then save the logs. Takes a while to get it all setup.

Looks like it it only saves logs for the individual vm guests. Is there a way to get the overall log in a file?

Those vbox.logs will be what you want, though there is an overall log in "C:\Users\{you}\.Virtualbox\VboxSVC.log"

Zip all of them and attach them to the ticket.

Also, open one VM's vbox.log and look for the text "Attempting fall back to NEM". If that text is in the vbox.log, then host Hyper-V is enabled, see HMR3Init: Attempting fall back to NEM (Hyper-V is active)
