Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
Good morning
I upgraded from version 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 yesterday (not this computer so no log file yet) and the VM will not start.
Host: Windows 10
Oh, resintalled verstion 7.0.6 AND that will not allow the VM to start either!
Just in case there is a known issue
Thanks

Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
If you use VirtualBox 7.0.9 revision 157345, it won't be black.
Or you can use the latest GuestAdditions 157345 from the test builds. To facilitate the change in 7.0.8 (since you have black screen); you need to change the Graphics Controller in Settings -> Display so that you get the Windows screen.

Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
Simple07's suggestion about using the test builds is a good idea. Save the test build installer until you update again later. You'll need it if your host's MSI installation database goes south (they do) and the installer will not be available for download after the next even-number version gets released. Also note the special instructions for Windows 10 & 11 hosts.
However, you had a problem with versioning:
If you want to try the test build, be sure to bring all three segments up: Virtualbox itself, Extension Pack, and Guest Additions.
7.0.8's Guest Additions had a graphics bug in XP VMs. Running 7.0.6 or test build 7.0.9 GAs under 7.0.8 Virtualbox has been reported to work in XP VMs.
However, you had a problem with versioning:
Guest Additions can't be newer than Virtualbox, unless it's a test build GAs. Older is OK, synchronized is usually best, newer is usually bad.00:00:05.801494 VirtualBox VM 7.0.6 r155176 win.amd64 (Jan 11 2023 16:38:38) release log

Simple07 doesn't say what to change the graphics controller to, but I'll respectfully disagree and say that you should not have to change the graphics controller from its present setting of VboxVGA (no S). New XP VMs on my 7.0.6 host still gets set up with old-school VboxVGA. Although 3D acceleration requires the new VboxSVGA, no 3D drivers are provided for XP, only Windows 7 & later. So your VM can stay on VboxVGA.Simple07 wrote:To facilitate the change in 7.0.8 (since you have black screen); you need to change the Graphics Controller in Settings -> Display so that you get the Windows screen.

Thanks... installed the test build and seems to be working OK
VBoxVGA is the one and only then, and working ok (had to boot up in safe mode on the guest to install the GA from an ISO file)
Not sure how (maybe I did it already) to install the extension pack or to check that it is installed correctly.... ??

The Extension Pack gets installed or upgraded in the main Virtualbox window, File menu, Tools pop-out, Extension Pack Manager. The main Virtualbox window has to be Run As Administrator to make the change.

If that's the EP under "Latest 7.0.x test builds" then yes.
Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
Great.... would have expected it to be the same version...scottgus1 wrote:If that's the EP under "Latest 7.0.x test builds" then yes.

Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
The difference in the revision numbers kind of means that the source code of the VirtualBox Extension Pack wasn't changed by the last 157345 - 157301 = 44 SVN checkins, so it wasn't rebuilt.DonVetOne wrote:would have expected it to be the same version...
Can a 7.0.9 test build installer with any revision be used to uninstall every other 7.0.9 test build revision? Otherwise, I'd rather write something like "[...] and the installer will not be available for download after the next test build gets released, which could happen anytime."scottgus1 wrote:[...] and the installer will not be available for download after the next even-number version gets released.

Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
Thanks... all seems well... I assume the EXT Pack must be installed last?
In order to tidy things up a little now ---- how do I rename the VDI file from windowsxp-disk0001.vdi to simply windowsxp.vdi ?

Re: Virtualbox Upgrade from 7.0.6 to 7.0.8 Error
The EP must be installed after Virtualbox is installed. No requirements about EP vs GAs, they're two separate progs covering different functions, either may be installed first.DonVetOne wrote:I assume the EXT Pack must be installed last?
Per One issue per thread, we don't want subject creep in a topic, but we'll let this one squeeze by.DonVetOne wrote:how do I rename the VDI file
Main Virtualbox window > File menu > Tools pop-out > Virtual Media Manager.
Select the drive to rename.
In the "Location" textbox, edit the name of the drive file. Don't change the path or extension, only the name portion.
Click Apply.
The drive name should change.
