Drag n drop leaves locked folder

Post by xerces8foo »

Host: Windows 10 Pro 21H2, Vbox 6.1.42 (the free version, no Extension Pack)
Guest: Windows 7 + Guest Additions v6.1.42

After dragging a folder from the desktop of the guest to the host, the folder stays locked on the guest and can not be deleted. The content (it only had files) can be deleted.
This is several minutes after the drag-n-drop operation.
The files/folders are copied correctly to the host. The problem is just that the original folder in the guest can not be deleted.

Did this ever unlock?

I'd lean towards the service behind Drag-n-drop not finishing and still having hold of the folder.

When this happens again, we'll need a VM log:

Start the VM from full normal shutdown, not save-state. Run until you see the problem happen, then shut down the VM from within the VM's OS if possible. If not possible, close the Virtualbox window for the VM with the Power Off option set.

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. In the "Logs" subfolder, zip the VM's "vbox.log", and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions so you can find the "vbox.log", not "vbox.log.1", etc.)

Drag and drop has always been glitchy, and given the range of possible OS's involved I don't see the situation improving any time soon. If I was you I'd stick to shared folders - that at least has actual cross platform standards to underpin it.
